A standout moment featuring Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) demonstrating his abilities was unveiled in a recent promotional photo for Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. While glimpses of Reed’s powers were provided in the film’s initial trailer, the full extent of these abilities has yet to be clearly displayed for fans.
In this promotional artwork for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, Pedro Pascal is depicted as Reed Richards, giving viewers an outstanding glimpse at the head of Marvel’s original superhero team and his remarkable abilities. The unveiled image also provides fans with a chance to evaluate the character design of Pascal’s Reed Richards against other interpretations of the character.
The promotional image, jointly unveiled by Marvel and Snapple, showcases Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, clad in the Fantastic Four team uniform. Reed is evidently demonstrating his abilities, with his left arm extended upward, giving the impression of stretching. Notably, his left arm appears elongated, and his left hand looks enlarged โ these are distinctive visual cues often used to depict his powers in on-screen portrayals.
The promotional image appears to be strikingly reminiscent of an artwork created by Chris Samnee for Reed Richards back in 2014, where Reed’s left arm is raised and his hand seems larger than usual. Interestingly, the right leg in both images shares a resemblance, suggesting that the promotional image may have borrowed its design from Samnee’s artwork.
In the preview for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, we get a glimpse of Reed’s abilities, particularly his elongation power. He’s depicted extending his body to traverse greater distances than usual and access areas that are typically inaccessible. Unfortunately, the shot of Reed isn’t a close-up, so the promotional image provides the closest look fans have had at his powers in detail.
Throughout various adaptations of The Fantastic Four, Reed’s abilities have remained consistent, whether it’s in comic books, films, or video games. Since there are limited ways to portray stretching on-screen, Pascal’s representation of the character doesn’t deviate significantly from Ioan Gruffudd’s portrayal of Reed Richards in the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films. (Check if Gruffudd will appear in Avengers: Doomsday here.)
In 2005’s “Fantastic Four”, Reed Richards, portrayed by Gruffudd, utilized his elastic abilities to keep Ben Grimm stationary. Although the manner in which he stretches and expands his limbs remains consistent, the CGI from “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” appears slightly more refined.
Yet, a specific scene in the 2005 movie clearly demonstrates that Reed possesses an extraordinary ability to elongate and manipulate his limbs to extensive degrees. This capability has not been depicted in the promotional material for Pascal’s version of Reed as shown in the First Steps.
As a movie enthusiast, I recall ten years ago when Ioan Gruffudd first donned the mantle of Mr. Fantastic. More recently, Miles Teller took over the role in just one film, continuing the legacy of this iconic Marvel character.
In the film, Teller’s portrayal of the character might exhibit elongation abilities much like the way Reed Richards’ powers are shown in the movies, ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, as well as in the comic books.
In a scene from the movie, Reed is shown lying flat with his arms extended. Notably, his left arm seems to swell, resembling the pose of Pascal from the promotional image for “First Steps”.
A well-known rendition of the character that numerous fans might recognize is the playable video game persona from Marvel’s “Rivals”. In this depiction, Reed Richards, as shown in the picture, exhibits stretchy abilities in a more conventional manner, as evidenced by his arm expanding to give a thumbs-up.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I must admit that the game “Rivals” showcases Reed’s talents more effectively compared to the movies. For instance, in this game, Reed has the incredible ability to detonate his midsection, transforming it into a colossal ball – a spectacle that, unfortunately, hasn’t been portrayed as vividly on the silver screen.
While that particular pose may not be particularly remarkable on its own, it’s essential to highlight due to Reed’s unique talent for manipulating his body in any way he desires.
If he desired to shrink down to just one millimeter in height, he might stretch himself out flat on the surface, thereby thinning himself to fit that measurement. Alternatively, he could lay himself flat and effectively transform into a protective shield capable of deflecting bullets.
What’s clear is that Rivals has demonstrated aspects of Reed’s abilities that other forms of media haven’t. There’s a good chance that Pascal’s portrayal of the character could unveil some unique and jaw-dropping demonstrations of power, but we’ll have to be patient until the movie comes out.
On July 25, 2025, the film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to premiere in cinemas. This marks the beginning of Phase 6 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The cast includes Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Julia Garner, who will portray a female version of the Silver Surfer in this production.
As a passionate cinephile, I was thrilled when I had the exclusive chance to witness Joseph Quinn’s electrifying portrayal of Johnny Storm up close โ thanks to that Snapple campaign! It gave me an unparalleled glimpse into the full spectrum of his powers.
How Will The Fantastic Four: First Steps Handle Reed’s Powers?
It’s understandable that Marvel Studios should be given some leniency when it comes to portraying Reed Richards on screen, as the complexity of his abilities might exceed what can realistically be achieved in a live-action movie or series. His unique powers allow him to manipulate his body in ways that could prove challenging to depict accurately in a live setting.
It appears that Marvel Studios has no plans to minimize Reed Richards’ screen presence in any of their upcoming films, given that they have recruited one of the most prominent actors in the entertainment industry to portray the head of what is arguably their most significant team. As a result, fans should anticipate seeing this character in many scenes, not just in “First Steps”, but also in the Avengers series.
In all probability, Reed’s abilities are expected to resemble how films typically depict the powers of previous incarnations of Mr. Fantastic.
It’s quite surprising if Marvel Studios didn’t include at least a couple of elements that left fans amazed. Of course, they needed to showcase Reed’s powers in the trailer, but it’s reasonable to assume that his complete abilities will be revealed when the movie comes out (even though his powers were comically demonstrated in a LEGO set for the upcoming film).
For quite some time, I’ve shared the ardent desire of many fellow enthusiasts to witness the Fantastic Four gracefully integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given this long-standing anticipation, I have no doubt that Marvel Studios will go above and beyond to ensure that the film exceeds our expectations, leaving us spellbound by the spectacle when it finally hits the big screen.
