On Friday, Jeff Margolis, renowned for his work as a television producer and director of live events such as the Oscars, Emmys, and SAG Awards, passed away at the age of 78 in Nashville, Tennessee.
For more than four decades, Margolis has been the mastermind behind many significant television productions, such as presidential balls and special shows starring iconic personalities like Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Midler, and Cher.
The SAG Awards Committee expressed their gratitude for Jeff Margolis’ significant role in creating memorable moments during awards shows, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards. For more than 16 years, Jeff played a crucial part in making the telecast an occasion fitting for the actors being recognized. The committee acknowledged Jeff’s contributions and shared that they will deeply miss him.
Initially, he began his career by assisting his uncle, Monty Hall, with cue cards during “Let’s Make a Deal.”

22 times, Margolis oversaw the American Music Awards; he managed a total of 8 Academy Awards, 7 Screen Actors Guild Awards, and 3 Emmy ceremonies. Additionally, he handled 3 special events for Golden Globes Red Carpet broadcasts, as well as 2 Academy of Country Music Awards telecasts.
Besides these, he has also been recognized for his work in “Richard Pryor: Live in Concert” and two holiday specials titled “Christmas in Rockefeller Center.
Among his honors were two Director’s Guild of America Awards for directing the Oscars, six Emmy nominations for his work as director during the Academy Awards from 1991 to 1996, and Emmy wins for both the 1995 Oscars and Sammy Davis Jr.’s 60th Anniversary Celebration event.
For 16 years, Margolis utilized his industry knowledge and creative vigor while serving as the executive producer of the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Jeff Margolis was frequently quoted as expressing, “The excitement I feel while directing is beyond words…I eagerly leap out of bed each morning, ready to head to work,” as stated in his memorial tribute.
2020 saw the publication of his autobiography titled “We’re Live in 5: My Unforgettable Journey in Television,” featuring an introduction by Billy Crystal.
He is survived by his children, Adam, Erin, and Samantha and grandchildren Max and Milo.
