Ryan Reynolds, known for his roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, is considering the idea of an X-Men team-up film, but he seems to be more interested in bringing his adult-oriented style to the Star Wars universe instead. He recently approached Disney with a concept for a movie within the iconic sci-fi series that would carry an R-rating. Given that shows like Andor are already part of the Star Wars universe, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine Reynolds’ ideas finding their way into a potential reality.
During an episode of The Box Office podcast, Ryan Reynolds shared that he proposed a mature, low-key R-rated Star Wars film to Disney. Unlike a Deadpool-style adaptation, this concept didn’t involve popular Star Wars characters. Instead, Reynolds aimed to create a more adult-oriented story set in the galaxy far, far away. Although it doesn’t seem like the idea has progressed past the pitching stage, Reynolds presents compelling reasons why Disney should consider taking the risk on an R-rated project.
I proposed an idea to Disney about creating an R-rated version of ‘Star Wars’. I suggested this not because it would be filled with explicit characters, but because there are numerous characters they could use. The R-rating wouldn’t imply vulgarity, but rather serve as a means to explore deeper emotions. I often ponder why studios shy away from taking risks like that.
I, Reynolds, shared that I wouldn’t appear in the Star Wars project personally, as I perceived it wouldn’t align well with the Deadpool character. Yet, this doesn’t imply I’d shy away from penning and producing within that universe altogether – there might still be some intriguing twists if managed skillfully.
I’m not expressing a desire to star in it, as that wouldn’t suit me. Instead, I’d prefer to contribute as a producer, writer, or work behind the scenes. These roles thrive on scarcity and unpredictability, which is something we don’t always get with ‘Star Wars’ due to Disney+, but there’s still room for surprise.
Currently, Reynolds is engaged with his personal ventures, one of which supposedly involves a collaborative X-Men film featuring Deadpool. Meanwhile, Star Wars has been exploring a grittier side of the series for quite some time now. While shows like Star Wars: Starfighter and The Mandalorian & Grogu are on their way, Andor on Disney+ demonstrated that there’s room in the franchise for more mature narratives. Although Andor wasn’t classified as a mature-rated series, it contains some of the darkest and most violent scenes in the entire saga. The Ghorman massacre scene, in particular, is filled with intense emotion and graphic violence that surpasses anything else in Star Wars.
The Perfect R-Rated ‘Star Wars’ Project Is Staring Right At Us
Certainly, let’s rephrase that in a more conversational and accessible way: You know, it seems like Darth Vader from the Star Wars series is used quite extensively now, but he could still be the main character in an R-rated movie. Interestingly, filmmaker Osgood Perkins, who recently worked on Longlegs and The Monkey, has expressed interest in directing a horror film focusing on Darth Vader. This film would present a series of chilling stories that encapsulate his deepest fears and darkest dreams.
From a fan’s perspective, transforming Darth Vader into an unrelenting, chilling villain who mercilessly pursues his adversaries could make for a spine-tingling horror movie told from the viewpoint of his terrified victims. Unlike Obi-Wan Kenobi, who delved into the man beneath the mask, a Darth Vader film could amplify his ominous presence to heart-stopping heights. Granted, this is just daydreaming and conjecture. But if the climax of Rogue One serves as any hint, then Darth Vader seems primed for a horror-focused, mature-rated tale.
