Paramount Pictures’ eagerly awaited movie encounters strong resistance in its bid for box office dominance. Yet, the Tom Cruise-starring sequel is already breaking records within the Mission: Impossible series, signaling what Paramount aims to be a successful cinematic journey.

In its Thursday previews, “The Final Reckoning” raked in an astounding $8 million, setting a new record for any Mission: Impossible movie. This action-packed blockbuster surpassed the previous record set by “Dead Reckoning” ($7 million) and made a cool $2 million more than its predecessor, “Fallout.

Produced with a potential budget of up to $400 million, “The Final Reckoning” is projected to earn around $75-$85 million in the U.S. and approximately $200 million worldwide over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The last “Mission: Impossible” film to debut on Memorial Day weekend was in 2000, when “Mission: Impossible II” made $70.8 million during the extended weekend. To match or surpass box office expectations, it will depend on its performance against Disney’s live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch“, which garnered $14 million in previews and is estimated to earn between $150-$160 million domestically.
