“A tariff of 25% must be paid by Apple” Tim Cook threatened by Trump for continuing to invest in India

This morning, U.S. President Donald Trump persisted with his warnings towards Apple’s CEO Tim Cook regarding Apple’s intentions to increase iPhone manufacturing outside of the United States. Earlier, Trump had expressed concerns about Cook’s plans for expanding production in India. It appears that Apple is trying to bypass the higher tariffs imposed on China (currently at 25%) and opting instead for India’s lower 10% tariff. Essentially, high U.S. tariffs have prompted some companies to shift production away from the U.S.’s competition. However, Trump has now threatened to boost tariffs on Apple to stimulate further domestic production investment within the United States.

“A tariff of 25% must be paid by Apple” U.S. President threatens Tim Cook to invest in the U.S. or else

For a while now, the U.S. has imposed exceptional taxes (tariffs) on many countries worldwide, causing turmoil in the global economy. However, President Trump introduced a 90-day suspension of these tariffs, which ends this August. This delay was significant in discussions about pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2, as Nintendo postponed pre-orders in the U.S. and Canada due to these tariffs. After the delay, Nintendo did not raise the console’s price but increased their accessory line by around $5-$10. Following this, both Sony and Xbox have incrementally boosted the prices of their digital goods and hardware respectively. Given that the 90-day pause is ending soon, it wouldn’t be unexpected to witness additional price hikes in the near future.

President Trump posted a message on Truth Social, stating, “I’ve previously informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect iPhones sold in America to be produced domestically, not in India or elsewhere. If this isn’t the case, Apple must pay a minimum tariff of 25% to the U.S. I hope you’ll consider this matter.” This follows Apple’s promise to invest $500 billion in the U.S. over the next four years and a personal donation of $1 million from Tim Cook to President Trump’s inaugural fund. It’s worth noting that the cost of tariffs will likely be passed on to consumers, meaning American buyers may end up paying more for their iPhones.

As I write this, Apple hasn’t given a response regarding potential additional tariffs. However, it’s challenging to foresee the ongoing construction of their $1.5 billion plant in India coming to an abrupt halt. For the time being, we can only speculate who will make the first move.
