The genre of superheroes is widely favored, featuring multiple interconnected worlds at present. This ensemble includes Sony’s Spider-Verse (though it doesn’t feature Peter Parker), boasting ongoing projects such as Kraven and Madame Web, both accessible via a Netflix subscription. In the latter production, Sydney Sweeney portrayed Julia Cornwell, and she has shared three reasons why she remains unbothered by its underperformance at the box office.
The film adaptation of “Madame Web” flopped at the cinemas upon its debut, and both critics and audiences had highly unfavorable reactions. On Netflix, it seemed to garner more hate-viewing than genuine enjoyment. In an interview with Empire, the star of Euphoria shared some silver linings from her time on that notoriously challenging production. To quote her directly:
It’s always enjoyable being involved in ventures that exceed your individual scope. At that point, I hadn’t tackled a studio film, and I was establishing my production company [Fifty-Fifty Films]. I had some projects that I was keen to present to studios, and I needed to boost my reputation, within the studio environment. Taking on a project like that significantly enhances your market standing.
Her assessment isn’t off base. Sydney Sweeney’s collaboration with Sony began due to her impressive work in the superhero movie, and it seems this partnership has led to more opportunities within the studio. Although Madame Web‘s ending may not have explicitly launched a new franchise, the project served as a significant milestone for the actress/producer.
Sweeney acknowledges that Madame Web played a crucial role in helping her produce the hit romantic comedy “Anyone But You“. This seems to indicate that she’s content with how her time as Spider-Woman turned out. In the same conversation, she also mentioned another factor contributing to her enthusiasm for the project, saying:
In addition, I desired to perform an activity that my adolescent cousins could enjoy watching. Since they often struggle to grasp what I’m doing, I found it enticing to execute something amusing and impressive for them.
This makes perfect sense, given the mature nature of the projects the actress has been involved with. For instance, her harrowing portrayal in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and the explicit content in ‘Euphoria’, which requires a Max subscription to stream – these aren’t the kind of productions she can casually discuss with her younger relatives.
Despite the fact that Madame Web didn’t fare well with critics or at the box office, Sydney Sweeney cherishes her experiences working on the project. In her own words:
What truly counts for me is the enjoyment I had during the experience, as I believe that if you’re passionate about something, the end result – whether it’s commercial success or not – becomes secondary. Of course, we all hope for the project to be well-received and appreciated by audiences, as that ensures everyone involved benefits from its success.
A genuine outlook on work appears incredibly beneficial overall. Not all films become blockbusters, thus it falls upon Sweeney to derive satisfaction from the actual process of filming and production on set.
Despite Madame Web not being a hit at the box office, Sydney Sweeney seems to believe that the film served her well. Moreover, her acting career remains robust, with several upcoming projects slated for release in 2025.
