Mubi’s shopping spree of Cannes competition titles is continuing at pace.
I’m thrilled to announce that “Sirât,” the brilliant work by Oliver Laxe, has been picked up by a distributor, streaming platform, and production company. This news marks the 9th film from the Cannes 2025 competition lineup that will be joining Mubi’s upcoming selection – and I can hardly wait!
The International Sales for The Match Factory have been assigned, and it’s expected that Mubi will reveal their release strategy shortly.
In my role as an ardent admirer, I find myself immersed in ‘Sirât’, where I join a father (Sergi López) and his son on a harrowing quest. They’ve found themselves deep within the mountains of southern Morocco, tracking down Mar – their missing daughter and sister – who vanished months ago amidst the endless, pulsating raves that never sleep. Amidst the thumping electronic beats and an uncharted feeling of raw, invigorating liberty, they continue to circulate her photo in hopes she’ll be found. As hope dwindles, their resolve only strengthens, leading them to follow a convoy of revelers bound for one final desert party. As we delve deeper into the scorching wilderness, this odyssey pushes them – and us – to confront our personal boundaries.
Additionally, Bruno Nunez, Stefania Gadda, Joshua Liam Henderson, Tonin Janvier, Jade Oukid, and Richard Bellamy are among the cast members in the film. According to EbMaster’s review, this movie is a “remarkably strange, cult-worthy depiction of human psychology pushed to its extremes.
Pedro Almodóvar, Agustín Almodóvar, and Esther García are the heads of production company El Deseo. Xavi Font and Laxe work at Filmes Da Ermida, Oriol Maymó for Uri Films, Mani Mortazavi and Andrea Queralt for 4A4 Productions, and Domingo Corral for Movistar Plus+. Additionally, Fran Araújo and Guillermo Farré serve as associate producers under Movistar Plus+, with Holger Stern also contributing to the production team.
Obtaining the distribution rights for “Sirât” has occurred only a day following Mubi’s announcement of multi-region agreements for Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent,” Mascha Schilinski’s “Sound of Falling,” and Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident.” Earlier during the festival, one of its major moves was acquiring Lynne Ramsey’s “Die My Love,” followed by Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value.” Before Cannes even started, it had already secured U.S. rights for “History of Sound.” Mubi also produced “The Mastermind” and retained various territories prior to the festival.
