Doom: The Dark Ages Is About To Get Even More Punishing On Its Toughest Difficulty Mode

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate the unstoppable force I feel in Doom: The Dark Ages. Yet, the masterminds at Id Software are aiming to crank up the difficulty level. What sets this apart is their innovative approach called “Tunables.” This system enables them to tweak specific aspects of the game without the need for a formal patch update.

Although Tunables aren’t designed to solve intricate systemic issues, content problems, or coding errors, they do allow for tweaks within the latest Doom game that result in subtle yet discernible modifications. Essentially, players aiming to prove their skill on Nightmare mode might find themselves breaking into a sweat, as formidable foes such as the Cosmic Baron and Hellknight will inflict greater damage. In fact, Id Software has expressed a desire to ramp up the threat level of these enemies on Nightmare difficulty, making an instance where you miss a parry on the Agaddon Hunter’s overhead slash cause your shield to break temporarily and leave you exposed for a brief duration.

I clarified that there are mechanisms built into the game to enhance a player’s survival chances when they’re close to death, but I found these systems were being overly generous. This allowed players to force their way through scenarios where they should have lost a Life Sigil or died. To encourage smarter tactical choices, we plan to adjust these mechanics. These modifications will affect overall player survivability and will be more prominent as you increase the Damage Scale slider.

Last week saw the debut of Doom: The Dark Ages, and in a matter of days, it managed to amass an astounding 3 million players – a feat achieved seven times faster than its predecessor, Doom Eternal. Interestingly, two million of these players were from Game Pass, as The Dark Ages was introduced on this platform on the very first day. However, despite this significant number, it remains unclear if the game is commercially successful, as Bethesda has been rather secretive about the financial aspects such as development and marketing costs for The Dark Ages.

In his review for TopMob’s Doom: The Dark Ages, Alessandro Barbosa states that the game skillfully balances innovation and adherence to its original appeal, leading the series into a fresh direction while still maintaining its captivating essence.
