In episode 9 of the fourth season titled “A Slippery Slope,” the series Hacks reintroduces two characters who had previously been absent since season 3. The second-last episode of season 4 showcased a surprising move by Deborah Vance, as she decided to discontinue her late-night show to support her head writer, Ava Daniels, and challenge Bob Lipka’s movie studio, which attempted to shield a contentious movie star before the release of a significant film. In the end, Deborah opted to side with her longtime friend, even though it came at a high personal cost, as their friendship had been strained throughout season 4.

In the ninth episode of season 4 in the series Hacks, while Deborah and Ava’s storyline dominates, more attention is paid to Jimmy and Kayla than before in this season. In contrast to her decision in episode 8 of season 4 to reject her father’s bribes for a comfortable position at the Latitude agency, Kayla stands up for Jimmy when he’s ousted from Deborah’s studio late at night to protect Deborah’s live feed from Bob. In addition to these events, it is also revealed that Kayla and Jimmy are working together on a film project with Jimmy as producer, reminiscent of the episode in season 3 featuring Christopher Lloyd.

This Hacks Season 3 Jimmy & Kayla Storyline Has Hardly Been Touched On In Season 4

In the fourth season of Hacks, details about the Fatty Arbuckle biopic that Larry mentioned in Season 3 finally surfaced. This project, which was initially hinted at by Christopher Lloyd’s character Larry, was revealed to be in progress with Jimmy and Kayla working on it. Interestingly, Jack Danby, a character from Season 3, was also announced as the star of this film, serving as another nod or Easter egg within the context of Season 4. Despite Larry and Jack not appearing in Season 4, episode 9, their connection to the storyline provided a welcome reference, as it appeared for a while that the Jimmy and Kayla plotline might have been left unresolved in Season 4.

Given that Deborah (and Ava) are currently unable to work for 18 months due to a non-compete clause in Deborah’s contract, it might be an excellent opportunity for Jimmy’s biopic about Fatty Arbuckle to gain more focus. With Jimmy and Kayla being unable to bring any job-related matters to Deborah during this period, their characters can instead explore other ventures. Since Jimmy recently lost a client to Latitude, it would be strategic for Kayla to start attracting more talent, perhaps even poaching clients from her father’s company as payback for taking one of Jimmy’s clients. Furthermore, with Deborah being on the sidelines, Jimmy could now take on his first film-producing project.

It Would Be Great To See Actual Footage Of The Fictional Movie

Just as I’d get excited flipping through movie posters at my local cinema, it’s intriguing to catch a glimpse or see some promotional materials for Jack Danby and Larry’s Fatty Arbuckle’s upcoming film, given the repeated mentions we’ve had. With Deborah’s late-night show now wrapped up, Jimmy and Kayla can continue to explore the glamorous world of Hollywood and LA, which has taken center stage in season 4 of Hacks, more so than in previous seasons. Bringing Lloyd back for a potential season 5 of Hacks would be terrific, as it would shift the behind-the-scenes action from TV to movies.

In the hypothetical fifth season of Hacks, Deborah’s inability to perform opens up various scenarios for her character. Although she’s no longer able to do stand-up or promote her brand (which isn’t hers anymore), she might find a new role as an executive producer on Jimmy, Kayla, and Larry’s Fatty Arbuckle movie. This would be quite a departure for Deborah, but during her break from the limelight, she may seek relevance and excitement. Ava could join the team as a writer, or better yet, Jimmy could create a new film with Deborah starring, to be released after her Hacks contract ends.
