Dogs have been recognized as humankind’s most faithful friends for a long time, making it understandable why people adore seeing them in numerous tales. Abundant with loving canines, the realms of literature and cinema are teeming with such loyal companions. Interestingly, even dogs with comical traits can be found beyond the world of superheroes.
Including a dog in a comic book is an ingenious method of introducing fresh themes, such as loyalty, devotion, and heartwarming moments. Dogs often serve to make characters more relatable, creating additional reasons for readers to adore them. From iconic pups like Krypto to lesser-known canines such as Ms. Lion, comic books have a special place in the hearts of dog lovers everywhere.
This Adorable Dog Is a Member of the Pet Avengers
“That’s Spider-Man. He’s my owner’s nephew.”
Ms. Lion is a well-loved canine character who has graced the pages of Marvel comics throughout various universes. Contrary to her name and adorable appearance, Ms. Lion is in fact male, a point often humorously emphasized in the comic books. Over time, this fluffy hero’s look may have subtly changed, but his friendly and steadfast character remains consistent.
Aunt May’s cat, Ms. Lion, recognizes that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Not only is he part of the Pet Avengers, a group of heroic animals who tackle significant threats, but he has also demonstrated that he’s more than just a typical pet. He’s fought against the Masters of Animal Evil, helped safeguard the Infinity Stones from Thanos, and on Earth-97161, he even communicates telepathically with other Pet Avengers through the power of the Mind Gem.
This Dog Is a Sidekick to Obscure DC Comics Characters
“Look at Bulletdog go!”
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the bond between superheroes and their canine counterparts. In my world of comics, there’s Bulletdog – an unwavering sidekick to Bulletgirl and Bulletman. This four-legged friend has been a staple in DC Comics since 1942, making him a veteran hero with a rich history. Over the years, he’s undergone numerous transformations, adapting to the reboots of DC, even altering his appearance from a speckled pooch to a charming shepherd breed.
Prior to transforming into the flying superhero known as Bulletdog, he was commonly referred to as Slug. However, after receiving a special gravity-controlling collar, he acquired the power of flight and embarked on a path of heroism. Similar to other courageous canine characters from Marvel Comics, Bulletdog is unwaveringly loyal and deeply committed to his owners, as well as the battle against crime.
Previously Known as Arrow, the Pet of Cliff Barton
“RWOF?!”
In Marvel Comics, Lucky the Dog, often considered one of the luckiest pups around, truly lives up to his name. Originally known as Arrow, this fortunate pooch was once owned by a member of the Tracksuit Mafia until he was saved by Clint Barton. Following a harsh attack at the hands of the gang, the dog was rechristened and eventually found a new life with Kate Bishop.
Despite not having any supernatural abilities, Lucky has become a cherished character within the Marvel universe. He forms a deep connection with both Hawkeyes and often accompanies them on numerous escapades. His fame skyrocketed significantly after an event, underscoring the fact that he is indeed a lucky canine.
This Dog Is a Standout Image Comics Character
“All of us are rescues. We were all abandoned too. But you really are safe now.”
The comic titled “Stray Dogs” is an American horror story with a surprising turn of events, brought to you by Image Comics. This tale unfolds from the perspective of a band of canines, each having been saved by the same owner. Despite their newfound safety, they all carry a sorrowful past that lingers in their minds. Among them stands out Rusty, a shepherd-mix dog who appears to be the pack’s alpha figure.
Among the group, it’s Rusty who is the first to welcome new members, like tiny Papillion Sophie. Similarly, Rusty is the one who takes charge and makes daring choices, sometimes even putting himself in potentially dangerous situations. However, not all of Rusty’s tale is a happy one, but this only seems to make readers empathize more with this loyal and resolute dog.
Like All Inhumans, Lockjaw Has Superpowers
“A giant dog, with antennae growing out of his head! What have I stumbled onto??!”
-Johnny Storm
Known as Slobberchops, Lockjaw belongs to the Inhuman Royal Family. This means he possesses unique abilities that enable him with extraordinary powers. Lockjaw is capable of teleportation, transporting not just himself but also others along for the journey. It’s worth noting that he has demonstrated the ability to transport as many as a dozen individuals simultaneously, which is quite remarkable.
Over time, Lockjaw has embarked on numerous exciting journeys. He’s collaborated with multiple superhero squads, like the Inhumans, Guardians of the Galaxy, and not forgetting the Pet Avengers. Similarly, Lockjaw has partnered with several legendary heroes such as Ms. Marvel and Beta Ray Bill. Through it all, he remains a steadfast pet and is always ready to lend a paw in whatever heroic endeavor comes his way.
This Trusty Dog Keeps Batman’s Son Company
“This Great Dane’s a wonderful choice, mister Wayne. He’ll be a great addition to the family.”
Likely, devoted fans of DC Comics are aware that Damian Wayne often takes in strays. Alfred Pennyworth, famously, gifted him a cat named Alfred the Cat. There’s also Titus, the Great Dane. Bruce Wayne acquired Titus for Damian, hoping it would strengthen their relationship. At first, Damian wasn’t fond of the dog, but eventually, they became inseparable friends.
Titus is an ordinary Great Dane, yet he doesn’t shy away when duty calls. He’s as much a part of the Batman family as anyone else, leading him to temporarily take on the role, albeit briefly. However, what truly stands out about this loyal dog is his role in teaching Damian about love and trust.
Thori Has Made Many Appearances in Thor Comics
“Master can’t be dead! Who will tell Thori he’s a good dog?! Unmurder master now!”
Thori, a descendant of both Hel-Wolf and Hel-Hound Garm, is known as the toughest of his seven siblings and any attempt to dispute this could result in a swift attack. Born with a fierce disposition, he’s more renowned for his violence and bloodlust rather than eloquence, traits inherited from his powerful lineage.
Although he exhibits a wild demeanor, Thori proves to be remarkably faithful. Once he establishes a relationship with someone, that bond remains steadfast. His loyalty extends to Thor, Kid Loki, Angela, Leah, and Sera. Equipped with powers such as summoning infernal flames, flight, and traversing dimensions, Thori is much more than a growl. He possesses significant strength and there’s no escape from his pursuits.
Superman’s Best Friend Is Incredibly Loyal
Someone was hurt by this, and Krypto seems to like people – he even injured the same individual. People care about places, so I make sure to safeguard them on their behalf. Krypto is indeed a good dog.
Is it likely that there is another character who shares the same qualities as Krypto, Superman’s trusted companion? It’s unlikely. Beyond being just a pet, Krypto is an integral part of the Superman family. With powers such as super strength, super speed, freeze breath, heat vision, and flight, he possesses many of Superman’s famous abilities and uses them to safeguard those he cherishes.
As a gaming enthusiast, let me tell you, I’m not your average dog – I’m a Kryptonian canine, that’s Krypto! My dedication to safeguarding Earth has made me an indispensable ally, not just for Superman but for groups like the Legion of Super-Pets. Comics, animated shows, movies, and most recently, the Absolute Universe have all showcased my unwavering significance in the DC Universe, proving I’m more than just a pet, I’m a legend!
Cosmo Was Once Part of the Soviet Space Program
“That does it. That enough. No more Mr. Nice Dog. Now Cosmo will hurt everyone.”
Cosmo, often referred to as “Cosmo the Space Dog”, is undoubtedly one of the most renowned canines in Marvel Comics. Originally a test subject for the Soviet Space Program, he was propelled into space as part of an experiment. Rather than meeting a sad end, cosmic rays transformed him, bestowing upon him remarkable psychic powers. Since then, Cosmo has been traversing the galaxy, experiencing numerous adventures throughout his journey.
As a psionic character, Cosmo boasts an array of talents such as moving objects with his mind (telekinesis), communicating mentally with others (telepathy), creating deceptive images (illusions), erecting protective barriers (force fields), and even exerting influence over minds. He’s a formidable adversary, yet invaluable as an ally. Currently, Cosmo is recognized for his role in Knowhere Corps, but he has also served in other capacities. You can catch a glimpse of him in the upcoming film, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Batman’s Dog Is a Good Boy
“GOOD Bad-Dog!”
-Terry t0 Ace
Characters like Ace the Bat-Hound have been part of comics for such an extended period that they’ve gone through multiple transformations, and Ace is indeed one of them. Regardless of the incarnation, Ace consistently demonstrates unwavering loyalty towards Bruce Wayne, being by his side during the most challenging times. Throughout the years, he has made appearances in various comic book narratives and animated shows, such as one where he functions as a reliable ally to a retired Bruce.
In many stories, Batman meets Ace during his patrols and eventually brings him along, usually claiming it’s just for a short while, but it always turns out to be permanent. The connection between them becomes evident, as Ace fully commits to the life of crime-fighting. Over the years, Ace the Bat-Hound has been depicted in various forms, yet his unwavering loyalty and eagerness to act upon command remain constant across all adaptations.
