In the final season of Chicago PD, several key characters find themselves potentially saying goodbye to the show due to significant, life-altering storylines that may shape their futures. Chicago PD is one of NBC’s enduring series under the One Chicago umbrella, and over its 12 seasons, both primary and secondary characters have joined and departed the program.
In the tenth season of Chicago PD, Jesse Lee Soffer’s character Jay Halstead departed from the series. Additionally, important characters like Sophia Bush portraying Detective Erin Lindsay and beloved figure Al Olinsky (played by Elias Koteas) left due to professional advancements and a fictional death, respectively.
As a dedicated fan of Chicago PD, I found myself pondering about the uncertain future of certain characters in Season 12, owing to their past indiscretions. The series continues to captivate me with its ensemble cast headed by Jason Beghe’s gripping portrayal of Hank Voight, Patrick Flueger as Adam Ruzek, LaRoyce Hawkins as Kevin Atwater, Marina Squerciati as Kim Burgess, Benjamin Levy Aguilar as Dante Torres, Amy Morton as Trudy Platt, and the latest addition to the team, Toya Turner, joining us as Kiana Cook in Season 12.
Is Anyone Leaving Chicago PD In 2025?
In the final episode of Chicago PD’s Season 12, the aftermath of Deputy Chief Reid’s vengeful scheme against Voight’s team unfolded. Although the team managed to deal with Reid, certain character fates remained uncertain as the season drew to a close.
Benjamin Levy Aguilar – Dante Torres
In the 12th season of Chicago PD, Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) experienced a deeply emotional ride. The crux of this emotion stemmed from his secretive relationship with his confidential informant, Gloria Perez. However, it was later unveiled that she was a drug dealer, which posed a significant risk to Dante’s career. Luckily, Detective Burgess chose to hide this information to protect her fellow officer.
Nevertheless, it came to Deputy Chief Reid’s attention that Torres had a romantic involvement with his Confidential Informant, potentially placing both him and Burgess in jeopardy. Towards the conclusion of Season 12’s second-last episode, Torres was apprehended for having an affair with his CI.
Initially, Season 12’s finale found Torres imprisoned, but he was later freed on bail. Regardless, there remains a possibility that his legal troubles might persist into Season 13, potentially causing complications that could jeopardize his position in the Intelligence Unit.
Amy Morton – Trudy Platt
Amy Morton’s character, Trudy Platt, has been a consistent presence on Chicago PD since its debut in 2014. During the One Chicago crossover event in 2025, Trudy was severely injured when she was shot by an old acquaintance. After a period of recuperation, Trudy reappeared as a Desk Sergeant in the latter episodes of Chicago PD‘s Season 12.
In the upcoming seasons of Chicago PD, Trudy might not depart right away, but she could eventually consider retiring in Chicago, given that her spouse, Mouch, has been promoted in the finale of Chicago Fire.
LaRoyce Hawkins – Kevin Atwater
In the series Chicago PD, Detective Kevin Atwater, played by LaRoyce Hawkins, has had his fair share of close calls regarding departures, notably in Season 12, Episode 6. However, these instances were not without merit. This season, Kevin’s storyline has focused on two significant events: embarking on a relationship with forensic psychologist Val Soto and mourning the loss of a childhood friend who was uncovered to be involved in criminal activities.
Following a brief suspension of the Intelligence Unit, triggered by Deputy Chief Reid’s retaliatory plot against Voight, we see Atwater in the final episode struggling to find meaning, as evidenced by his decision to ignore Val’s call at the outset.
At the conclusion of the final episode, it’s apparent that the beloved character’s return suggests he might struggle too greatly with the absence of the Intelligence Unit.
In the course of time, there might be a prolonged narrative for character Atwater that finds him at a critical juncture in his professional journey, potentially marking his departure later on. However, considering Atwater’s deep commitment to the team, we can expect him to keep going for some time before eventually retiring.
Sara Bues – ASA Nina Chapman
Assistant State Attorney Nina Chapman, portrayed by Sara Bues, has consistently stood by the Intelligence Unit since her first appearance in Chicago PD‘s ninth season. In the twelfth season, their bond with Voight deepened into a romantic relationship, and they joined forces to try to bring down Deputy Chief Reid.
Yet, Voight overstepped boundaries in the finale, orchestrating events from behind the scenes, which ultimately resulted in Reid being gunned down in full view. The last scene between Chapman and Voight implies that she disagrees with Voight’s actions regarding Reid, potentially leading to a dissolution of their relationship.
In an interview with TV Line, the producer of Chicago PD, Gwen Sigan, revealed that Chapman strongly dislikes Voight’s actions. She further explained that their current situation is reminiscent of a difficult breakup for both characters.
Chapman strongly disapproves of what happened. It was an action that crossed a moral and ethical line that he can’t accept. That’s where she drew the boundary. Additionally, throughout the entire event, she tried to persuade him not to go to the place he ultimately went, acting as his conscience, trying to guide him away from danger. Even in their first scene together, she told him “You cannot ignore me. I will help you,” and he refused to listen. By the end of it all, she realizes that there’s no other chance for anything else. So in my opinion, it feels like a breakup for Chapman, and it’s a sad moment for her.
The comments made by the showrunner regarding Chapman possibly finishing with Voight might signal that she could permanently depart from the series following Season 12. However, it’s also possible that she could make a short comeback in Season 13 to wrap up any remaining plotlines.
Is Jason Beghe’s Voight Leaving Chicago PD?
In the final episode of Season 12 for the series “Chicago PD,” Detective Hank Voight endures a tumultuous journey filled with highs and lows. Given the circumstances, this isn’t surprising since his Intelligence Unit was abruptly dismantled.
As a passionate film aficionado, I found myself joining Voight on his covert mission to bring down the formidable Season 12 antagonist, Deputy Chief Reid. However, our hopes were dashed when our sole lead met an untimely end due to a devastating car accident. In the face of this setback, Voight became desperate and resorted to unconventional methods in his quest for victory over Reid. Unfortunately, in the heat of battle, he crossed a line that should never be breached.
It emerged that Voight secretly orchestrated events to incriminate Reid. This included influencing a crucial witness by offering them immunity, as well as indirectly persuading Otero’s teenager to murder Reid following their conversation about how Otero had passed away.
In Chicago PD Season 13, it remains uncertain whether Voight’s actions will be exposed. However, the series consistently emphasizes that every action they take has repercussions, even if those consequences aren’t immediately apparent – they may surface at some point in the future.
This has caused fans to speculate whether Voight might choose to leave the Intelligence Unit after Season 13 and future seasons.
In a recent chat with TV Line, I, as a movie critic, had the opportunity to delve into the thoughts of Chicago PD’s showrunner, Gwen Sigan. When discussing the future of Voight post his dramatic actions in the finale, she hinted that the upcoming season might present quite a challenge for him as he grapples with the consequences of his decisions.
The query left hanging is one I ponder too; it seems Voight finds himself in a similar conundrum. Time will tell where this journey leads him next. At present, I believe he justifies his actions as worth the outcome and the price paid. Yet, such convictions can change over time, making the question even more intriguing. It’s a complex character trait, one that allows him to venture into dark realms and make difficult choices, but whether he can truly live with those decisions indefinitely is a mystery that continues to unfold.
In the end, there was a hint suggesting that Voight might be reconsidering his decisions, but once set in motion, these actions proved unstoppable for him.
If he eventually confesses his actions later on, the consequences could be severe, with the most unfavorable outcome being that Voight departs from the Intelligence Unit and begins anew elsewhere.
Indeed, it’s clear that “Chicago PD” consistently portrays Voight as the heart of the show, and it’s quite possible that he will conquer his inner struggles during the upcoming season.
