Disney has postponed the release of not just one but both and . Even though filming for the next Avengers movie is already in progress, fans will now have to be patient a little longer before they can catch these highly anticipated movies on the big screen. These films are said to be among “the largest productions ever created”.
Initially slated for a summer release next year, specifically on May 1, 2026, the film titled “Avengers: Doomsday” has had its premiere date moved. Now, it’s scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, potentially competing against films like “Dune: Messiah”, “Shrek 5”, and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “The Chronicles of Narnia”.
The release date of “Avengers: Secret Wars” has been postponed from May 7, 2027, to December 17, 2027, coinciding with the planned release of “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum“. Noteworthy, an unnamed “Star Wars” movie was initially scheduled for this date. However, it’s expected that this film might get rescheduled to accommodate the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s grand finale, marking the end of their multiverse saga.
What Do the New Release Dates Mean for the MCU?
Although delays are generally perceived negatively, the postponements for the forthcoming Avengers films might actually be advantageous for Marvel Studios. This extra time allows them to avoid the hasty production that characterized some movies during Phase 4 of the MCU, ensuring a more polished final product.
Due to simultaneous filming of “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” this dual project is set to be one of Marvel Studios’ most remarkable ventures yet, requiring ample time for its execution. If these films are to be shot concurrently over the next several months or beyond, it could squeeze the timeline too tight to meet the original May 1 premiere date for “Doomsday.
Apart from these modifications, it’s important to note another concern that arises. In addition to the adjustments made, Marvel films initially scheduled for release in February 2026, November 2026, and November 2027 have been taken off the schedule. As a result, only the Sony collaboration titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday are currently set for release in 2026, which also delays Doomsday’s release after Brand New Day, originally scheduled for July 2026. Initially, it was thought that the next Spider-Man film would clarify Tom Holland’s absence during the events of Doomsday, but this might no longer be the case.
It’s evident that Disney plans to reduce the pace of Marvel Studios’ movie releases, and this adjustment means there will be about a year between the upcoming “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” this summer and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” next year. There appears to be little progress on other rumored films like “Doctor Strange 3,” “Shang-Chi 2,” and “Black Panther 3.” This leaves a significant gap, suggesting one of these might fill it. For now, the frequent Marvel releases seem to have shifted into scarcity.
