Try as he might, Tom Cruise can’t seem to keep his pants on.
Why wouldn’t he? Given that his daring portrayal in “Risky Business” catapulted him to stardom, it seems Hollywood continues to persuade Tom Cruise to bare it all repeatedly. In fact, his recent summer hit, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” includes not just one, but two scenes featuring the 62-year-old in his undergarments.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’ve always found myself rooting for Tom Cruise in his captivating performances. Though he hasn’t taken home an Oscar just yet, he certainly deserves the title of my favorite “undies” actor, if you will, given his impressive body of work. Here’s a glimpse into why I hold this opinion.
Risky Business (1983)
STYLE: Classic, old-fashioned boxer briefs.
SCENE: Cruise, portraying a conservative teenager, dances boisterously in his living room, clad in underwear and a slightly askew dress shirt, embodying a suburban uprising of sorts.
VERDICT: Immortalized in various parodies, such as “Guitar Hero” commercials and episodes of “Scrubs”, the original still reigns supreme.
Far and Away (1992)
STYLE: Antiquated undergarments that hint at more than they actually show.
SCENE: Nicole Kidman, portraying a reserved newcomer, discreetly observes Cruise as he removes his pants, exposing lengthy undershirts before retiring for the night.
VERDICT: It’s not just Cruise’s questionable Irish accent that seems out of place here. The reason behind Kidman’s growing fascination remains unclear – modern sleepwear often reveals more.
Magnolia (1999)
STYLE: Tight bikini-style underwear that doesn’t conceal much.
SCENE: Frank T.J. Mackey, a controversial motivational speaker, known for his misogynistic views, changes in front of a female reporter, exposing skimpy undergarments while boasting about his strategies.
VERDICT: If not for the offensive language, it would be commendable. Seems like someone’s been exercising diligently. Let’s refrain from commenting on… well, let’s just say he’s confident in his physique.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
In the ’90s, I was captivated by Cruise’s striking black swim trunks in a scene where he remained silent while Nicole Kidman shared tales of her past fantasies about a seductive naval officer she yearned to be unfaithful with. This prolonged monologue, reminiscent of the film’s lengthy production time of 294 days, was a testament to Cruise’s acting prowess as he gracefully allowed Kidman to command the spotlight, subtly portraying his emasculation over time.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning (2025)
STYLE: Thermal boxer briefs suitable for freezing Arctic waters.
SCENE(S): Cruise encounters danger while running on a treadmill in his underwear. Later, during the exploration of a submerged submarine, our hero is required to undress to his undergarments (for reasons unexplained).
VERDICT: Cruise’s upcoming assignment: Buy running shorts and appropriate swimming trunks.
