As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the Belgian masterpiece “Wild Foxes” (La Danse des renards) by Valéry Carnoy has been honored with this year’s Europa Cinemas Cannes Label for Best European Film at the 2025 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. This prestigious recognition was announced yesterday, preceding the Directors’ Fortnight closing ceremony later today.
The Europa Cinemas Cannes Label is one of three awards presented during Directors’ Fortnight, a non-competitive section that is partnered with Europa Cinemas. Two more honors, the People’s Choice audience award and the SACD Prize, will be announced later today at an awards ceremony. This year, French writer-director Thomas Cailley (“The Animal Kingdom”) will receive the Alpine Prize, a new accolade that celebrates filmmakers who challenge conventions and pioneer fresh paths in both French and international cinema.
In “Wild Foxes,” we see France’s Samuel Kirchner, who earned a promising actor Cesar nomination for Catherine Breillat’s “Last Summer” (2023), portray Camille, the top young boxer at an elite sports academy. After a minor injury from a fall, his confidence is shaken, transforming him from an alpha male into an outcast as he grapples with the violence he once idolized.
Tautly directed and sharply observed, “Wild Foxes” marks Carnoy’s feature film debut, following his successful short film “Ma planète,” which won the New Talent best short award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. A Europa Cinemas jury praised the film as a bittersweet and touching drama, stating that it “tackles the burning issue of young male friendship and fragility.” They also commended the ensemble cast for giving the film power and credibility.
Produced by Belgium’s Helicotronc (“The Break,” “Ghost Trail”) and France’s Les Films du Poisson, “Wild Foxes” is a testament to Carnoy’s star potential. The Europa Cinemas exhibitors are encouraged to extend the run of label-winning titles at their theaters, providing further opportunities for audiences to enjoy this remarkable film.
Previous recipients of the Europa Cinemas Cannes Label include “The Other Way Round,” “One Fine Morning,” “A Ciambra,” “Mustang,” and many more outstanding films from past years.
