Neon Takes North America on Jafar Panahi’s ‘It Was Just an Accident’

Neon acquired the North American distribution rights for the critically acclaimed film “It Was Just an Accident,” directed by renowned Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who made this movie following his release from Iranian prison. This is Panahi’s first work since gaining his freedom.

The movie featuring Mariam Afshari, Ebrahim Azizi, and Vahid Mobasser received a prolonged applause and stands out as one of the notable titles from Cannes.

The story ‘It Was Just an Accident’ revolves around intense emotions expressed by a band of ex-prisoners towards a particularly cruel jailer.”

Or, more colloquially:

“‘It Was Just an Accident’ focuses on some angry ex-cons taking aim at their old tormentor, the tough guard.

When you spend eight hours daily with a blindfold on, facing a wall and being questioned by someone hidden behind you every day, it’s hard not to ponder about what type of discussions we could have, as you shared in one of your initial interviews after a 14-year ban that prevented filmmaking, press interactions, and travel,” Panahi expressed to EbMaster.

This movie was jointly produced by Jafar Panahi and Philippe Martin, with Sandrine Dumas and Christel Henon contributing as co-producers. David Thion and Lilina Eche served as associate producers. The production companies involved are Les Films Pelléas and Jafar Panahi Productions from Iran, France, and Luxembourg. MK2 Films handles the international distribution rights for this film.

The agreement was worked out between Sarah Colvin and Jeff Deutchman from Neon, and Fionnuala Jamison representing MK2 Films, on behalf of the movie creators.

In their second joint project, “It Was Just An Accident” follows “The Year of the Everlasting Storm,” a previous collaboration that premiered at the Cannes Special Screenings in 2021, between Neon and renowned filmmaker Jafar Panahi.

Panahi is is considered one of his country’s greatest living film masters.

Back in 2010, I, a renowned filmmaker with a global reputation for critically acclaimed films like “The Circle,” “Offside,” “This is Not a Film,” “Taxi,” and more recently “No Bears,” faced restrictions that barred me from creating movies, interacting with the media, and traveling. However, I found ways to keep working secretly during this time. Fast forward to April 2023, these restrictions were finally lifted, and Iranian authorities granted me permission to attend Cannes to unveil my latest work, “It Was Just an Accident.

The previous year at Cannes, Neon obtained “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” from Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, a film that later earned nominations for BAFTA and Best International Feature at the 97th Academy Awards. This year, at the same festival, Neon premiered Joachim Trier’s critically acclaimed “Sentimental Value” and Julia Ducournau’s “Alpha” in competition. Additionally, they debuted Raoul Peck’s “Orwell: 2+2=5” and Michael Angelo Covino’s “Splitsville,” featuring Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona, both productions of Neon as well.
