Approximately ten years prior to the acclaimed HBO series adaptation of The Last of Us, the original game concluded with a somber note as Joel made a significant decision concerning Ellie’s fate, leaving behind a trail of blood on his conscience. This controversial action served as a central point for numerous fan discussions and played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of The Last of Us Part II and potential Season 2 of The Last of Us. Now, the director of The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann, is offering insights on one of the ending’s lingering questions: Would the Fireflies truly have been able to develop a cure by sacrificing Ellie?

In response to a question during an interview, Druckmann expressed that the Fireflies were intended to create a cure, meaning they had the potential to do so. However, he acknowledged that the science behind this claim may not be solid and has sparked doubts among some people. The most intriguing philosophical point for Joel’s actions, according to Druckmann, arises from this ambiguity.

The fact that Joel refused to let the Fireflies develop the cure was because they needed to sacrifice Ellie, whom he cherished like a daughter. To prevent this tragedy, Joel brutally killed all of the Fireflies at the hospital, an act that later brought about repercussions for him in multiple ways.

In the same conversation, Druckmann emphasized again that The Last of Us Part 3 might materialize if Naughty Dog creators craft a compelling narrative. Regarding the HBO series, both Druckmann and co-showrunner Craig Mazin hinted at Season 3 delving into Abby’s (played by Kaitlyn Dever) tale, whose father was fatally avenged by Joel at the hospital incident. Mazin also expressed his belief that The Last of Us Season 4 is crucial to concluding the narrative they’ve initiated. For now, HBO has only announced that Season 3 will indeed be produced.
