Devil Jam Beginner’s Guide – Sins, Abilities & More

Enjoying Devil Jam, a lively game reminiscent of Vampire Survivors but with its own distinctive spins, is a treat! However, due to some complex mechanics within the game, it can be challenging for beginners. To thrive amidst the onslaught and emerge as the supreme musician, follow our beginner’s guide for Devil Jam.

How to Choose Your Sins

In the game, there are several “assists” or advantages that can aid you during your playthroughs. Each session offers various choices, so you must decide which ones will benefit you most. If you accept assistance from three distinct sins, you won’t receive help from others as you have already made commitments to those three.

Instead of immediately choosing the options at the top, consider reusing your reroll tokens for another chance. If you ever exhaust your tokens, remember that you have the option to negotiate with the devil to acquire more.

Best Abilities to Invest in Early

Each playthrough of the game offers a distinct experience due to its wide array of unique abilities. It’s advisable to focus on these abilities depending on your chosen build. Skills that push enemies away or launch multiple attacks tend to be particularly useful.

Additionally, you’ll benefit from bonus effects too, which either multiply the number of your skill projections or expand the coverage area of your abilities. Some of the top skills you could acquire early on include:

AbilityDescription
Green SerpentVipers slither from your shadow and poison enemies
Ball & ChainThrows a fireball that comes back to you after one beat
Keep Your DistancePeriodically knocks enemies back and applies vulnerable

How to Place Your Abilities

In the game Devil Jam, your character unleashes abilities from left to right in each column. You have a total of three columns for placing these abilities, which will be activated sequentially as shown. Proper placement is crucial to maximize effectiveness.

It’s best to position your more potent skills at the beginning of each column, followed by the others in an appropriate order. This is because there are numerous skills that enhance your abilities, so they should ideally be positioned before the abilities they boost. Additionally, you’ll find a limited number of slots in your skill inventory that amplify the damage of any skill placed within them by 10%.

How to Get HP

Given your constant encirclement by adversaries, it’s likely that you’ll take damage and lose health points. To mitigate this issue, consider exploring the map to discover hidden items such as a milkshake or a pie. Gathering these will help in restoring your depleted health.

Conversely, some enhancements (or bonuses) grant you a steady health restoration feature that kicks in when you’re not receiving any damage. Typically, these enhancements deduct from your total health capacity, but they offer more benefits than drawbacks.

How to Win Runs

In Devil Jam, it’s crucial to continually explore the game map as standing still for long periods can lead the monsters to swarm you rapidly and decrease your health. On the upper right corner of your screen, you’ll find a mini-map that marks all the interactive locations.

Here are various locations marked on the map offering temporary power-ups to enhance your character’s abilities. Although these power-ups usually don’t last forever, they can help you defeat challenging foes such as mini-bosses. There are specific spots, though, like the Tribute to the Fallen, where you can acquire permanent buffs at the expense of some HP. I recommend visiting this location when you aren’t in grave danger of losing a significant amount of HP from enemies and have enough time to strengthen yourself safely.
