As a die-hard fan, I’ve been on this incredible journey with Mario Kart World since 2017. Incredibly, it was initially conceived as a game for the original Nintendo Switch, but now, it stands tall as a launch title for the eagerly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2!
Information on the development history of Mario Kart World has emerged from Nintendo’s Developer Q&A series, with one of its producers, Kosuke Yabuki, revealing that conceptualization for Mario Kart World started as early as 2017 and switching the game to the Switch 2 platform was a significant boost in morale.
During the creation process of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we were already brainstorming ideas for the next installment of the game. In fact, we initiated prototyping in March 2017, and it wasn’t until late that same year that we formally began working on it as a project.
From the onset of its development, several key aspects of Mario Kart World were already established, such as its open-world environment and ability to accommodate up to 24 players. Additionally, unlike being labeled as Mario Kart 9, the team opted for the name Mario Kart World right from the start. This decision was made to distance themselves from the traditional track-focused gameplay that the series was previously associated with.
During the development process for Mario Kart World, technical issues arose due to the larger player count, as stated by programming director Kenta Sato. He explained that it was challenging to fit all their desired features on the original Nintendo Switch, and the team was mindful of the compromises they needed to make throughout the process.
Sato explained that we pondered options such as softening the imagery, reducing its quality, and at times, contemplated slowing down the frames per second from 60fps to 30fps. He described it as a challenging predicament.
Instead of deciding what to cut back on, the team had been postponing that decision until the arrival of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pack, which provided them with additional development time, as stated by Yabuki.
Yabuki mentioned that the discussion about transitioning to the potential Nintendo Switch 2 platform sparked numerous opportunities for innovation. He described it as a beacon of optimism.
The game, Mario Kart World, is set to debut simultaneously with the Switch 2 on June 5th. Earlier, Nintendo provided insights into Mario Kart World’s Free Roam mode, its playable characters, and confirmed items. More recently, they clarified that they did not employ AI for creating specific billboards within Mario Kart World, putting an end to such speculation.
