As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been eagerly watching the resurgence of movies based on video games, with blockbusters like “Sonic the Hedgehog” paving the way. Even the reborn “Mortal Kombat” franchise managed to spark enough interest for a sequel. So, it was just a matter of time before another major fighting game series joined the fray, and the upcoming “Street Fighter” movie seems poised to outshine them all!
The Mortal Kombat movie didn’t have many famous actors associated with it. However, Karl Urban, who will appear in MK2, is arguably the most recognized name linked to that series. On the other hand, for the Street Fighter reboot, there are reports suggesting that they are considering well-known stars such as Jason Momoa and Roman Reigns from WWE. This news has certainly caught my attention.
Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns And More Could All Join Street Fighter
Discussions about potential cast members have surfaced, featuring Jason Momoa, Jey Uso (Reigns), Noah Centineo, and Andrew Koji. Although no definitive announcements have been made about their roles, it’s being speculated that Koji might play Ryu, while Centineo could be cast as Ken – both key characters in the series. Additionally, Reigns is rumored to be in line for the role of Akuma, who trains both Ryu and Ken. As for Momoa, his possible character remains a mystery, given the numerous Street Fighter characters available.
In discussions” can sometimes imply that a decision hasn’t been reached yet, meaning the casting might not materialize. Nevertheless, it generally suggests that a deal is probable, so there’s a strong possibility these four prominent actors may feature in the upcoming movie.
The Street Fighter Cast Is Looking Strong, And That’s Exciting
The process of selecting actors for a Street Fighter film is considered crucial as fans eagerly anticipate seeing these iconic characters brought to the screen. The more well-known the cast members, the greater the interest among viewers. Regrettably, the initial Street Fighter movie, which was less than satisfactory, primarily served as a platform for Jean-Claude Van Damme, despite Raul Julia’s impressive portrayal of the villain.
The news that the reboot is apparently considering multiple well-known figures instead of just a couple, makes this project more intriguing. Although famous actors aren’t always essential, the success of “Mortal Kombat” demonstrated that fighting games can be effectively transformed without big names; the presence of several suggests a film that will be structured as an ensemble piece rather than focusing on a single actor or character to showcase.
In the year 2023, the directors Danny and Michael Philippou of “Talk To Me” were appointed as the directors for the “Street Fighter” movie. But recently, Kitao Sakurai has replaced them as director. This change resulted in the movie’s initial release date of 2026 being pushed back. However, with rumors of casting conversations underway, it seems the project is gaining momentum once more.
I’m even more excited for Street Fighter now than I was before, especially if the main characters are strong. If so, we might just have a truly remarkable production on our hands.
