In the 2008 “Phineas and Ferb” episode titled “Comet Kermillian,” Candace, their older sister, spends a day at the park. Unluckily, a pair of squirrels find their way into her trousers due to a sequence of mishaps. As she breaks out in uncontrollable laughter, a group of street performers nearby mistakenly believe she’s dancing and spontaneously compose a lively rap song called “S.I.M.P” (“Squirrels in My Pants”).
15 years down the line, “Squirrels in My Pants” saw a revival – this time on TikTok. In no time, personalities ranging from Lizzo to MrBeast were recreating their unique renditions of “Squirrels in My Pants”. Moreover, users began inventing their own spin-offs based on other popular Phineas and Ferb episodes such as “Busted” and “There’s a Platypus Controlling Me.”
(The goal here is to maintain the original meaning while making it more natural and easy to read.)
During the pandemic, “Phineas and Ferb” emerged as a popular comfort choice for Generation Z who grew up watching the show and revisited it on Disney+ while being teenagers or young adults. They continued to engage with it, frequently transforming scenes from the show into memes.
Dan Povenmire, one of the creators, noted, “I figured out that this is where all the ‘Phineas and Ferb’ enthusiasts have gathered.” Povenmire has gained TikTok fame (over 6.8 million followers) due to his portrayal of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, the less-than-competent villain from the show.
Over the course of its original broadcast on Disney Channel and Disney XD, the duo of Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh (who lends his voice to Major Monogram) were responsible for creating 126 episodes of the show “Phineas and Ferb”, along with numerous spin-offs, films, and even a live touring event. Additionally, they produced books, clothing lines, toys, video games, and various other merchandise. Their subsequent project, “Milo Murphy’s Law”, was set within the same universe, with characters like Doofenshmirtz making appearances in it as well.
Following “Milo,” Povenmire and Marsh ventured into separate endeavors. However, Disney executives had different plans in mind. The enduring impact of “Phineas and Ferb” in popular culture, along with its continued commercial success, sparked discussions about a potential comeback.
Povenmire recalls them asking, “What was our most recent hit show?” To which he responded, “‘Phineas and Ferb,’ of course.” Then Marsh chimed in, “No one could convincingly explain why we ceased producing it.
Povenmire comments that if Disney doesn’t produce more content, then unauthorized merchandise sells well. “Take a peek at social media,” he notes, “you’ll find countless individuals wearing a platypus onesie resembling Perry the Platypus. It seems they could be missing out on potential profits by not producing additional episodes.
Ayo Davis, in her role as president of Disney Branded Television, spearheaded an effort to reunite the team behind the unique series, “Phineas and Ferb.” She enthusiastically remarks, “Phineas and Ferb stands out – it’s intelligent, musically inclined, and remarkably original. It leaves a lasting impression on viewers, whether they’re children experiencing it for the first time or parents who can’t help but join in the singing.
As a dedicated cinephile, I couldn’t help but feel the excitement swell within me when I learned that there was solid evidence supporting the return of “Phineas and Ferb.” According to internal streaming data from Disney+, the show has been streamed an astounding 650 million hours worldwide. To add fuel to the fire, a new “streams” channel on Disney+, which offers endless loops of “Phineas,” was launched this month and is already experiencing remarkable growth.

Despite no new episodes being released for ten years, “Phineas & Ferb” ranks among the top ten most-watched animated children’s series on streaming services by overall viewers in the first quarter of 2025, as indicated by Nielsen data. Furthermore, Nielsen’s calculations show that the franchise has accumulated a total of 12.6 billion hours watched across both linear and streaming platforms since its debut in 2007, according to data from Disney.
For Povenmire and Marsh, the key focus was ensuring Disney wanted the original “Phineas and Ferb” unchanged. They found great satisfaction when Disney said they didn’t want any reinvention or evolution, just more of what they were already doing. This was particularly appealing to them.
Disney has commissioned a 40-episode revival for this series; the initial two episodes will debut on both Disney Channel and Disney XD on June 5, with the first set of ten episodes becoming available on Disney+ from June 6. The core team of writers remains largely unchanged, and all original voice actors have returned to reprise their roles.
According to Marsh, we assembled a team of writers that had a mix of experienced professionals who’ve worked on similar projects and are familiar with all the characters, along with some fresh, enthusiastic fans of the show. Interestingly, one of our voice actors, Olivia Olson (Vanessa), is also part of this team. In fact, one of our new writers knows so much about the series that he can tell us exactly which episodes contained specific elements. Previously, we used to consult the fan wiki site for such details, but now it’s simpler just to ask him directly.
In terms of voice actors returning, it includes Vincent Martella (the actor portraying Phineas Flynn) and David Errigo Jr. (who replaced Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Ferb Fletcher in 2020). These two characters are the title characters of the series. Additionally, Ashley Tisdale returns as Candace Flynn, Caroline Rhea as Linda Flynn-Fletcher, Dee Bradley Baker as Perry the Platypus, and Alyson Stoner as Isabella Garcia-Shapiro.
In the revamped version of “Phineas and Ferb,” there are a couple of subtle alterations that devoted fans might pick up on. One such change is a modification in the theme song. Typically, it begins with Bowling for Soup singing, “there’s 104 days of summer vacation!” For the initial episodes of this comeback, however, the lyrics have been adjusted to read, “there’s another 104 days of summer vacation.” Povenmire and Marsh mentioned that this alteration is only temporary, and they will revert back to the original lyric after a few episodes.
Another update: With the passage of summer, the children have grown slightly. To make Phineas appear a bit taller, we included an additional stripe on his shirt, but he hasn’t physically become any taller,” Povenmire explains.

As a devoted fan and critic of animated series, I was thrilled to delve into the latest installments of this beloved show. Creators Povenmire and Marsh express their enthusiasm in expanding upon the rich tapestry of secondary characters such as Baljeet and Buford, offering ample opportunities for humor. In one episode, anticipate a hilarious twist with an enormous, seemingly mundane object that unfurls a purportedly profound narrative, complete with a catchy tune by the talented Michael Bublé. Additionally, expect further insights into Stacy’s unique knowledge of Perry the Platypus’ hidden identity, while Carl gains more depth through his backstory. Lastly, get ready for Meap’s (voiced by the charismatic John Stamos) long-awaited return in “Meap Me in St. Louis.” I can hardly wait!
In addition to Bublé and Stamos, the show will also feature a number of other famous faces. Among them are Brendan Hunt portraying “Dr. Shamai,” Cristo Fernández playing himself, Kelly Dempsey as the “Receptionist,” Alan Cumming as “The Haberdasher,” Jonathan Banks as the “Driving Instructor,” Lake Bell as “Villevielle,” Leslie Jones as the “Alliance Commander,” Anna Faris as “Samantha Sweetwater,” Megan Rapinoe appearing as herself, Meghan Trainor voicing the “Vending Machine Prime,” Rhys Darby as “Lomond” and Ruth Negga taking on the role of “Lieutenant Zarna.
Indeed, there’s even more exciting news: Creator Dan Povenmire is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of “Phineas and Ferb” Funko Pop figures!
Povenmire shares that we’re aiming to include everything we originally intended. Our goal is to make it feel like the familiar show people remember, evoking a sense of nostalgia. That’s what many viewers want, and we’ve been working hard to achieve this.
