Jai Courtney Teases Possible Captain Boomerang Comeback in James Gunn’s DCU Reboot

Actor who played Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad and DCEU has shown enthusiasm for a possible reprisal of the popular villain in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe. Although he isn’t certain if it will materialize, Courtney stated in an interview with MovieWeb’s George Edelman that “of course” he would be “ready and waiting.

Stepping away from the controversial DCEU era, helmed notably by Zack Snyder, DC Comics is poised for a fresh start under the guidance of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director James Gunn, first with this year’s ‘Superman’. Remember Jai Courtney, who charmed audiences as the cunning and ruthless Captain Boomerang in 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’, directed by David Ayer? Well, he’s set to make a comeback, promising more mischief with his lethal boomerangs!

After appearing in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” in 2021, Boomerang was killed off in the sequel. However, the continuity between the DCEU and DCU can be flexible. But would Courtney consider a return? Although he finds it unlikely, he is certainly open to the possibility.

To be honest, I rarely ponder the subject. It’s just not my area of expertise. If a significant creative decision were to arise and I were needed, I’d certainly be present. However, as far as I know, there are no immediate plans for us to meet up.

Jai Courtney Has Discussed His DCU Future With James Gunn

Although no definite plans have been disclosed at this moment, Jai Courtney has shared that he had discussions about Captain Boomerang’s future with DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. In his own words, “I told him, ‘Come on man, Boomerang is cool!’ And James responded, ‘You know the rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s over for good, right?’ To which I replied, ‘Absolutely!’ So there’s a glimmer of hope.” In the recesses of his thoughts, Courtney harbors a wish that Captain Boomerang might make a return someday.

Jai Courtney is honing his menacing character by starring in the horror film “Dangerous Animals,” which premiered to great acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Sean Byrne, known for “The Loved Ones” and “The Devil’s Candy,” “Dangerous Animals” also features Hassie Harrison alongside Courtney. The movie has received positive reviews from critics, earning a rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Acquired for U.S. distribution by IFC Films and Shudder in February, the film will hit theaters on June 6, 2025. For more information, read the official synopsis below.
