In the recently unveiled trailer for Superman, it seems Lex Luthor might have found a way to exploit Kal-El’s most significant vulnerability, sparking speculation about his strategies. As the release date of James Gunn’s Superman movie approaches on July 11, 2025, DC Studios has been ramping up its promotional efforts, and the official trailer for Superman was finally dropped in May 2025, offering fans what appears to be the final extensive glimpse at the initial film in the DC Universe.
In the sneak peek for the upcoming DCU movie, various aspects were emphasized that really piqued my interest. From the dynamic between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, the ethical dilemmas faced by Superman as he grapples with his convictions, to a host of Superman’s adversaries, the trailer offered an exceptional glimpse into what promises to be the DCU’s inaugural venture. As for the villains, the trailer subtly hinted at Lex Luthor’s strategy, even disclosing how he intends to exploit Kal-El’s most significant vulnerability. This has sparked a theory in my mind about how Luthor might use this weakness to his advantage.
Superman’s Trailer Appears To Show Metamorpho Creating Kryptonite
The Interesting Character Will Play A More Vital Role Than First Thought
The teaser for the movie titled Superman showcases many characters that will be significant in the film, both heroes and villains. Besides notable figures like Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific, the character who might be most intriguing – yet less emphasized – among DC heroes in Superman is Metamorpho. Anthony Carrigan portrays Metamorpho in the cast of Superman. In this movie, Metamorpho is a hero reluctantly taking on the role, named Rex Mason. Unknowingly, he gains the ability to transform his body into any chemical substance, as suggested by the trailer.
Intriguingly, a single scene from the Superman‘s trailer features Metamorpho confined, sharing cell space with Superman. Upon closer inspection of Metamorpho’s left arm, it emits a green glow, suggesting that he is altering his body to craft Kryptonite for Lex Luthor. This explains why the robots in the same scene are able to harm Kal-El.
Based On Superman’s Trailer, I Think I Know How Lex Luthor Gets Unlimited Kryptonite
Linked To Metamorpho’s DC Comics Stories
Based on this scene, I believe I understand how Lex Luthor might persuade Metamorpho into crafting Kryptonite. Given that Rex Mason is typically portrayed as a good guy and an ally of DC’s top heroes, it seems plausible that the story will unfold in this manner. In one trailer frame, particularly the one showing Superman being assaulted by robots within a glass cell, a woman appears in an adjacent enclosure. This could potentially be Sapphire Stagg, another DC Comics character who has a close relationship with Metamorpho.
It’s possible that in the comics, Sapphire Stagg and Metamorpho are held captive by Lex Luthor, with Luthor threatening Sapphire to force Metamorpho into creating Kryptonite to weaken Superman. This scenario might account for why Rex Mason, who is typically a benevolent character, would assist Luthor, thereby enabling Superman’s main adversary to acquire the means to harm the Man of Steel.
Other Aspects Of Superman’s Marketing Support This Metamorpho Theory
Metamorpho’s Dark Story Looks More Likely Than Ever
The intrigue surrounding this theory heightens due to the hint that the Stagg family will feature in the upcoming ‘Superman’. Although no casting announcements have been made for these characters, a sneak peek from the Superman trailer depicts the main character within the lobby of Stagg Industries. In the comics, Simon Stagg, a supervillain and protective father of Sapphire Stagg, is the proprietor of this company. His animosity towards Rex Mason frequently drives him to disrupt their relationship, playing a part in Mason’s transformation into Metamorpho.
In the comic book series Superman, Simon and Sapphire Stagg might be involved in some way. If Simon strikes a bargain with Lex Luthor, it could lead to Luthor acquiring both of them, possibly by betraying Simon. If this happens, Luthor would gain the ability to produce endless amounts of Kryptonite and the power to command Metamorpho to follow his instructions. This would escalate the conflict between Lex Luthor and Superman, as they clash for the first time in the DCU, potentially enlarging the scale of their battle within the universe.
