In a recent announcement, it was revealed that Doom: The Dark Ages marks id Software’s largest debut since the company first started in 1991, making it their most successful launch in their 34 years of existence, as reported by Bethesda.
The game managed to amass 3 million players in just about seven times the speed compared to Doom Eternal. Unfortunately, Bethesda hasn’t disclosed any sales figures, nor have they revealed information regarding development costs, marketing expenses, and other related expenditures. As developers often keep such details confidential, it can be tricky to accurately gauge a game’s overall success.
One important point to note is that unlike its predecessors Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal (2020), Doom: The Dark Ages was introduced on the Game Pass platform. As per Ampere Analysis, out of a total of 3 million players for Doom: The Dark Ages, approximately 2 million were new subscribers through Game Pass.

Currently, The Dark Ages isn’t among the 100 most popular games on Steam in terms of play frequency. However, it set a record for simultaneous players on Steam with 31,470 users on May 17, as per SteamDB statistics.
In contrast, Doom Eternal achieved over 104,000 simultaneous players on Steam at its peak, surpassing the previous record of 44,000 set by 2016’s Doom. However, Doom: The Dark Ages has fewer concurrent users on Steam compared to both games, but this doesn’t necessarily indicate poor performance for a single-player game that’s also available on Game Pass.
The Dark Ages gave the game an 8 out of 10. He expressed that occasionally, thoughtful adjustments can lead the series to unexpected places and result in some of its best parts.
