Carey Mulligan Joins Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’

Carey Mulligan is in talks to star in Greta Gerwig‘s “Chronicles of Narnia” adaptation at Netflix.

Should the agreement be finalized, Sarah Mulligan will become part of the already announced cast that includes Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, and Emma Mackey. If not, it appears that the project is still undergoing the casting process as per The Hollywood Reporter’s report on Mulligan’s recruitment.

In the sequel to her highly-awaited “Barbie” project, Greta Gerwig is penning and directing a fantasy tale called “The Magician’s Nephew,” based on the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’ series. This story is said to be a prequel to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and tells the origin of Narnia, created by Aslan the lion (voice by Streep). The two protagonists, Digory and Polly, are the ones who stumble upon the “Wood between the Worlds” after receiving a magical ring from an uncle (Craig). Mackey will portray Jadis, also known as the White Witch, the main villain of the series, while Mulligan is set to depict Digory’s ailing mother. The film’s main characters have not been cast yet.

Netflix chose not to respond regarding the matter. Back in 2018, they obtained rights for the “Chronicles of Narnia” book series and announced intentions to create new movies and shows set within this magical realm. This extensive agreement, spanning several years, represented the first time that all seven books were controlled by a single entity. Previously, the movies based on “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005), “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010) were produced under 20th Century Fox and Disney.

Gerwig’s unnamed “Narnia” film is projected to debut on IMAX screens around Thanksgiving Day 2026. For a fortnight prior, it will be screened globally exclusively on the company’s high-end large format screens, before streaming on Netflix around Christmas.

Carter boasts three Academy Award nominations for her roles in Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” Bradley Cooper’s film about Leonard Bernstein, titled “Maestro,” and the maturation story “An Education.
