It seems that Night City won’t be able to contain the excitement for the next chapter in the Cyberpunk 2077 saga. CD Projekt Red is taking us beyond the city limits and venturing into the Midwest!
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the next chapter in the Cyberpunk saga, code-named Project Orion, is under development! Fresh from completing Phantom Liberty in 2023, CD Projekt Red is fully immersed in the pre-production phase. Can’t wait to see where this journey takes us in Night City!
The Boston office of the studio is spearheading the project’s development, and job postings suggest that it will maintain its personal perspective. Their goal is to create a more intelligent crowd system, enrich the storyline, and introduce new settings. However, don’t get too excited yet; this release won’t be available before 2028, possibly even in the 2030s. Right now, they are primarily focusing on The Witcher 4.
Cyberpunk 2077 sequel trades Night City glam for Chicago grime
For the exciting part: In a recent conversation with the Polish gaming magazine CD-Action, creator Mike Pondsmith hinted at something intriguing. He suggested that the upcoming release, Orion, will include a new city, one which he described as being reminiscent of “Chicago in disarray.” However, he also confirmed that Night City is here to stay.
Get ready to strap in and perhaps revisit Joe Keery’s End of Beginning once more, as the upcoming Cyberpunk playground might expand, grow grittier, and become more winding.
Mike Pondsmith is the creator of the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG, which served as the foundation for Cyberpunk 2077. He wasn’t just a figurehead in the game’s development; he was deeply involved in shaping its world and atmosphere. As a result, Night City embodies a gritty, surreal vision of future California. Therefore, when he offers hints, it would be wise to pay attention.
He mentioned during the interview that we also go to another city, which he referred to as ‘Night City.’ It doesn’t seem like the futuristic metropolis portrayed in Blade Runner; instead, it appears to be a corrupted version of Chicago from the 2080s, according to his description. As fans have long speculated, this could support the theory that Orion is set in this time period. To end the conversation, he playfully added, ‘I guess I can’t help but talk.’
As a gaming enthusiast myself, I’m eagerly anticipating CDPR’s Boston studio taking the helm for Project Orion, having learned some tough lessons from Cyberpunk 2077. It might be a while before we can dive into this potential behemoth, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on!
