In 2025, S.W.A.T. was among the shows that got canceled, but fans and some of the cast members remained optimistic that the franchise wouldn’t be over. The series finale left viewers craving more, even though the show concluded on the 2025 TV lineup, there’s still more to unfold, particularly for Hondo. Sony Pictures Television commissioned a new spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, with Shemar Moore returning to play his beloved character as the S.W.A.T. sergeant. Recently, in a video, Moore expressed mixed emotions and likened himself to Tom Brady.
The spinoff, which received a 10-episode order from SPTV, will see Hondo working with a new team of young recruits, meaning that 20-Squad will be no longer be the focus. Moore took to Instagram to share a lengthy video in which he talked about S.W.A.T. Exiles. He specifically mentioned how he might “catch some flak” from the industry and from fans for what he’s about to say, but he was still elated that he “won the battle.” He also noted used a sports analogy when discussing the parent show and offshoot series:
In a sense, I’m not equating myself with Tom Brady, legendary football player. However, much like he is to football, I am to S.W.A.T., my team, my family, my squad. It’s not about self-glorification or mistake; it’s simply the truth. I’m the leader, the one they call Hondo. But I didn’t do it alone; we were a unit, a strong and cohesive force, like a TV show. We were more than just colleagues; we were a team for life. Just as in sports, Tom Brady may be the quarterback, but teams stick by their leaders, and I’m that man. Trades might happen to other players, but the core remains, pushing forward with our leader at the helm.
The professional sports world can be unpredictable, with teams sometimes making moves that leave fans in awe. At first glance, it may seem peculiar for Moore to equate himself to a future Hall of Fame NFL quarterback like he did. However, given his top billing on the cast list, Moore is essentially playing the role of the quarterback in this context. Moore further added:
Overflowing with pride and gratitude, I won’t offer an apology for anything. I’ve given it my all for 31 years to achieve what I have, and I’m thrilled about the future. I’m ecstatic that S.W.A.T. gets another chance to play.
Shemar Moore acknowledged his former colleagues, expressing gratitude for their hard work over eight years, describing it as “nailing it.” Additionally, Sony announced that this spinoff will maintain employment for the 200-strong local production team who had worked on the original series. The actor from Criminal Minds emphasized that not only is the new show preserving jobs but also keeping Hollywood in Los Angeles, which he highlighted as a significant achievement.

In the course of their discussion, Moore revealed that Exiles held a bittersweet significance for him. As he prepared to depart from S.W.A.T., ahead of its series finale, he expressed his appreciation for the fact that the show managed to last as long as it did, overcoming two cancellations along the way. Although the franchise is set to take a new path, Moore can’t help but recognize just how unique the series, its cast, crew, and especially its fans are.
Absolutely, it’s a mix of feelings, but ultimately, we should feel incredibly proud. We achieved something remarkable, something that caught the attention of both the world and our industry. Shows come and go, but S.W.A.T., with its exhilarating action, captivating stories, and strong sense of camaraderie, has proven to be unstoppable. It’s because of you, our loyal fans, that S.W.A.T. endures. So, today, we celebrate this milestone, but let’s also remember those who helped us reach this point, and express our gratitude and appreciation for their support.
The S.W.A.T. Exiles series is set to film this summer as per Moore’s statement, however, at present, no network or streaming service has picked it up. Sony plans to circulate it among various networks and streamers in search of suitable homes and collaborators that will cater to the existing fanbase and draw in new viewers. While there are numerous potential destinations for this show, I’d be taken aback if it lingers on the market for long given the appeal of this intellectual property. It’s unclear at this point whether any more veteran characters will make an appearance, but some actors were unsure if SWAT had truly ended permanently. Given Moore’s close bond with his castmates, it wouldn’t be unexpected to see members of 20-Squad reappear to support their leader. Either way, it’s delightful to know that Moore is looking forward to the future and holds his co-workers in high regard, having worked together for almost a decade.
