Mike Pondsmith hints Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel will feature a new city to explore

At the 2025 Digital Dragons conference in Poland, Mike Pondsmith – the creator of the Cyberpunk universe – unveiled some thrilling updates about the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. He announced that players will have the opportunity to depart from the renowned Night City and explore a completely new urban environment instead.

Cyberpunk sequel may leave Night City

The Digital Dragons event, one of Europe‘s leading B2B gatherings in the video game sector, was organized by the Krakow Technology Park this year. From May 18 to 20, 2025, it took place at the ICE Krakow Congress Center. Among the attendees this year was Mike Pondsmith, inventor of the Cyberpunk tabletop game series, which served as inspiration for _Cyberpunk 2077_, a game developed by CD Project RED.

During a conversation with Michal Manka (previously from TVGRY, currently working for Find Your Next Game by GameStar), Pondsmith hinted that we might explore a different city in the upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. However, he cautioned that he couldn’t reveal much more. He didn’t mention any specific names or provide details, making it seem like an unintentional disclosure. The interview starts at 3:06:11 and can be viewed in full on the TVGRY YouTube channel as part of the Digital Dragons stream.

For some time now, there’s been a buzz suggesting that the city featured in the sequel might be Chicago. This speculation arises from certain posters within Cyberpunk 2077, which mention the city. One such poster reads, “Travel from Chicago to Night City in under three hours, coming in 2080.” Could this be a subtle hint that the rumor may indeed hold some truth?

We’re not quite there yet in terms of having definite information, as the upcoming Cyberpunk game is currently known as “Project Orion” and lacks an estimated release date. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t indulge in some imaginative guesswork, given that things appear to be coming together nicely.
