The upcoming Minecraft movie is nearing the milestone of earning $1 billion at the box office, yet it could miss this mark due to another film potentially capturing its viewership.
Leaving Ne Zha 2 out, as it has earned an impressive $1.89 billion and ranks among the top grossing films ever, A Minecraft Movie has significantly outperformed most Hollywood movies this year, raking in hundreds of millions more than them.
The film has earned approximately $929.9 million globally, placing it as the second highest-grossing video game adaptation behind “The Super Mario Bros Movie,” which raked in a staggering $1.36 billion, ensuring it maintains its top position for the time being.
With the movie spreading rapidly online, causing chaos in cinemas due to the “chicken jockey” craze and Jack Black’s “Steve’s Lava Chicken” song topping the charts, many believed it would reach the billion-dollar mark. However, another film is making it extremely challenging for this movie to achieve that milestone.
Lilo and Stitch may ruin A Minecraft Movie’s billion-dollar chances
According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, the live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch is projected to have an exceptionally large opening weekend. As per Deadline’s report, it currently holds the top spot for first-day ticket presales among PG-rated movies in 2023.
This implies that it’s poised to outperform “A Minecraft Movie,” which earned an impressive $313 million globally during its initial weekend launch. Notably, “Lilo and Stitch” is scheduled to debut over the extended Memorial Day weekend, ensuring a substantial influx of moviegoers – translating to many families purchasing tickets.
It’s not surprising that people are quickly flocking to our platform to reserve their tickets for the unforgettable Memorial Day weekend as Stitch comes back to the big screen in a triumphant return,” Jerramy Hainline, Fandango’s Executive Vice President, stated.
On their opening day, ticket sales for Lilo & Stitch trail only behind those of 2019’s The Lion King remake – a movie that eventually earned an impressive $1.65 billion during its time in theaters.
Translation: In other words, if Lilo & Stitch becomes a hit in theaters across the globe, there will be numerous showings daily from Friday to Monday for it. Compared to that, Minecraft will still be playing in cinemas, but it will only be on fewer screens, leading to fewer available tickets.
As a devoted admirer, I must acknowledge that there’s a significant overlap in our audience demographics. Minecraft, with its established fanbase from yesteryears, certainly has an edge. However, when it comes to family-friendly entertainment, Lilo & Stitch stands tall as a formidable rival. It’s not just a remake; it’s a modern Disney classic that resonates deeply with audiences of all ages, making it a tough contender indeed.
It’s likely that Lilo and Stitch will rule the box office for about three weeks before the release of the How to Train Your Dragon remake causes another shake-up in the movie market.
