In contrast to the acclaimed 2024 action movie “Rebel Ridge,” which starred Aaron Pierre and was written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier, a former Navy SEAL found the fight scenes lacking in realism and accuracy when reviewing it. The film, initially praised for its compelling storyline, boasted a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes last year. However, despite Pierre’s martial arts background in boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which was showcased in “Rebel Ridge,” the Navy SEAL had some critical comments regarding the film’s action sequences.
DJ Shipley, a retired Navy SEAL, recently discussed action movie fight scenes with Insider. Upon viewing Rebel Ridge, he critically analyzed the film’s portrayal of firearms and police procedures. During the scene where Terry (Pierre) and Chief Sandy (Don Johnson) first meet, Shipley pointed out, “You notice Don Johnson reaches for his pistol just before doing so, he starts to create space, begins to back up,” Shipley explained. “That’s exactly what he should do.” He went on to say:
If Don Johnson had been paying closer attention, he might have noticed that the man was getting closer. In that case, he could have picked up his speed and pulled out his gun quicker.
It seems to me that his method of handling that gun isn’t likely to work out well, given that his finger is already on the trigger. The initial bullet will undoubtedly be fired.
In conclusion of his brief critique on Rebel Ridge, DJ Shipley remarked that while there were a few noteworthy small scenes and aspects, the film was marred by the predicament that Terry found himself in. This, according to him, was the movie’s most significant flaw. He rated it as a 5/10, stating, “He is skilled, but the action is there,” he said. “I must add, this is the worst-case scenario. You have to confront two men, both armed, in bright daylight across an open field.
Aaron Pierre’s Skills Are on Full Display in ‘Rebel Ridge’
However, it’s important to note that there were some positive aspects to the situation. As mentioned before, Aaron Pierre has a rich background in martial arts, which was evident during the fight in Rebel Ridge. In the altercation, Terry managed to disarm an officer while he was on the ground, and this detail was appreciated by DJ Shipley. “He’s going to apply pressure on his left arm, intending to execute a modified Kimura,” Shipley explained. “It’s a move originating from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but it’s frequently used in military or combat situations. It’s one of their common disarm techniques.
Right now, you can catch the movie titled “Rebel Ridge” on Netflix. At this point, there’s no talk of a follow-up. Director Jeremy Saulnier shared back in September that he’s already immersed in his next venture, but it appears to be quite different from the intense, confined action of “Rebel Ridge”. In fact, he mentioned that his current project is leaning more towards the realm of his debut film, “Green Room”.
