Borderlands 4 boss thinks “real” fans should buy $80 games

According to Gearbox Software’s head honcho, Randy Pitchford, dedicated enthusiasts of the Borderlands series might need to consider purchasing Borderlands 4 at a potential cost of $80.

In the past few weeks, the cost of video games has sparked much discussion. Notably, Nintendo and Microsoft have confirmed their games will increase in price, with some experts speculating that blockbuster titles such as GTA 6 might even reach prices up to $100.

Concerns are growing among fans that they might not be able to afford their beloved games like Borderlands 4 due to increasing prices.

The much-anticipated follow-up is set to be released on September 12th, and Randy Pitchford has acknowledged in the past that it may retail for around $80. However, the CEO of Gearbox Software believes that true fans of the franchise should make an effort to acquire it, regardless of the financial implications.

Randy Pitchford claims real fans will “make it happen”

In response to a fan expressing concern about the potential high price of Borderlands 4 on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford replied that it’s not his decision but suggested that passionate fans could find a means to come up with the necessary funds.

“If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen,” said the reply.

Later, he proceeded to recount an incident dating back more than three decades. During that time, while holding down a low-paying job, he managed to scrape together funds to purchase Starflight.

Back in 1991, fresh out of high school and earning minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach, I stumbled upon a gem – Starflight for Sega Genesis, priced at $80 in my local game store. Determined to bring this cosmic adventure home, I managed to make it happen.

1) It’s not up to me.

If you truly appreciate the game, you’ll discover a means to get it. Back in 1991, when I was fresh out of high school, working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach, my local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis priced at $80. Yet, I managed to find a way to acquire it.

Some players took issue with the response, as they believed it failed to acknowledge the genuine financial difficulties they might face when considering the purchase of Borderlands 4.

That’s a very poor perspective, especially given the current cost-of-living crisis. One person’s response was something like, ‘If you’re a true fan…’ which is quite frustrating,” said one comment.

“There’s no way you just said that dumbass sh*t in 2025,” added another.

It’s yet unknown what the price of Borderlands 4 will be when it launches later this year, but it’s shaping up to be the largest game in the series so far. This game has been under development for almost as long as GTA 6, and it boasts absolutely no load times.
