- Despite retaining hardcore players, the game faces issues like cheaters and bugs, leading to series-low Steam reviews.
Monster Hunter Wilds stands among Capcom’s top-selling video games. Unfortunately, when it was initially released on PC, it had several issues that players encountered, and certain characters didn’t sit well with the community. However, its popularity skyrocketed, making it one of Steam’s most frequently played games throughout history.
In just under three months, an unexpectedly high number of players appear to be leaving the game at a pace much faster than Monster Hunter: World ever experienced.
Monster Hunter Wilds’ Peak Player Count Has Dropped By 97 Percent

At first glance, it seemed that Monster Hunter Wilds players were playing the game for a longer duration compared to World. A greater number of them reached Hunter Rank 100, and an increased number of these hunters bagged 100 large monsters. However, this could have been a misleading impression.
Based on SteamDB’s data, Monster Hunter World reached a peak of 41,101 players on April 19th, which is a massive decrease of about 97% compared to its launch week peak of 1.4 million players. Interestingly, in the seven years since its release, this game has never dipped below a 92% drop from its initial peak. Remarkably, it still managed over 26,000 players yesterday.
A few points are worth noting: Firstly, this figure only considers one out of the three main platforms where Monster Hunter Wilds debuted. Secondly, it’s important to remember that the peak performance of Wilds was significantly higher than World’s, which means it had a greater distance to decline. However, even with this context, the drop in its performance is still quite steep.
Unfortunately, it seems that Monster Hunter Wilds hasn‘t seen significant improvement in player numbers. In March, the game averaged approximately 378,500 players; however, over the past month, the average has dropped to around 53,842 players. This is a decline of 86% from its highest player count during the launch week.

Upon revisiting the Steam achievements for this game, it appears that Wilds is holding the attention of dedicated gamers: 36% of players have reached Hunter Rank 100 and 57% have hunted down 100 large monsters (an improvement since our last assessment). However, a significantly higher number of players are abandoning the game, indicating potential issues.
It seems there could be several factors at play here, and the game’s 58% positive review score, which is relatively low for the series, offers a fair reflection. Recently, Capcom had to issue a statement addressing an increase in cheaters within Wildsand, as well as altering how quest rewards were distributed due to this problem. Despite multiple updates and quick fixes, many of the game’s most significant issues persisted.
It’s certainly been a mixed bag for Capcom and Wilds.
