Initially, when it was announced that Disney+ would be producing a show about Andor, a character whose story concluded with an untimely demise, leaving nowhere for him to go, I, too, found myself questioning the decision. However, now that the second and final season of Andor has come to an end, my initial doubts have been completely erased.
Originally, it had been planned for the series to span over five seasons, but after watching the entire narrative unfold, most fans are content with what they’ve received. Even the series creator, Tony Gilroy, feels the same. However, he did mention that there was one particular scene he wished had been included, as discussed in an interview with .
He mused, “Perhaps it would involve plenty of hand gestures and lots of coffee drinking.” Yet, he admitted, “I’m not sure exactly what it would entail.” Regarding the unrealized seasons, he remarked, “I can imagine certain scenes, like Eedy visiting Luthen’s gallery. But I don’t feel any lack or void in these ideas.
The initial idea of producing five seasons for the show was abandoned quite quickly. Gilroy clarified this to a magazine when the shift occurred. “We were midway through filming Season 1, navigating through Covid, and only then were we truly grasping the sheer scale of the project, the workload, and all that it entailed,” Gilroy reminisces. “We came to understand that I didn’t have the resources to handle it, and Diego’s appearance wouldn’t hold up due to the extended production time. Fortunately, Disney stepped in and said, ‘If you can find a way to make it work, we’re on board.’
Essentially, the argument could be made that the pace of character aging in those five seasons was unrealistic for many viewers, yet they felt that Andor’s duration was just right.
Jyn Erso Was Never Intended To Be In Andor
Even with the series spanning over five seasons, Gilroy remained firm in his convictions, unwilling to yield, despite the ardent desires of the fans.
In the end, he concluded that if a person’s presence wasn’t essential, they probably shouldn’t attend. He also mentioned, “Bringing Jyn back as a cameo would have been quite uncool. It would have been disrespectful somehow.” Instead, he preferred to pay tribute to Rogue and maintain the integrity of the storyline. Many believe that he not only upheld the themes established by the initial movie but also showed respect for the Star Wars franchise overall.
