Over the course of almost a decade, I’ve been passionately engaged in the development of my fan-made game, Bionicle: Masks of Power. Unfortunately, this journey has come to an end as I’ve received a request from LEGO to halt its operation.
To signify the conclusion of their project, Team Kanohi – a collective of enthusiasts uniting to create their ideal “Bionicle game” – has shared a retrospective walkthrough of Masks of Power’s final build. This project was evolving into an engaging third-person action-adventure game, showcasing Lego’s famous masked ninjas, and it truly looks impressive. In an update to their supporters, Team Kanohi expressed confusion as to why Lego chose to close the game at this particular time. The team explained that they had diligently adhered to Lego’s guidelines regarding the use of Bionicle resources. Notably, the game was always intended to be free for players, and all websites and game pages were clearly marked as a fan-created project, like the Masks of Power.
It’s possible that Lego requested the removal of Masks of Power due to its growing popularity and potential competition with their official products, according to Team Kanohi. In a letter, they explained that the project might be mistaken for an official product by an average person at first glance.
Despite the closure of Masks of Power, Team Kanohi isn’t breaking up. Instead, they’ve decided to rebrand as Unmasked Games and are working on an entirely new project called Project Rustbound. This fresh title will leverage the expertise they gained during their work on Masks of Power. It may take some time before we hear more about Project Rustbound, but considering the quality of gameplay in Masks of Power, it seems this team could create a very engaging game in the future.
