The space combat game, Star Citizen, which is continuously funded through crowdfunding, is currently facing criticism from its players. The developer, Cloud Imperium Games, recently made adjustments to ship movement features, previously only available in the real-money store. This decision has sparked dissatisfaction among fans.
According to PC Gamer’s report, the introduction of flight blades in a recent update by CIG, enhancing ship maneuverability or speed, has sparked considerable backlash within the community. The main concern lies in the fact that these enhancements have been exclusively made available for purchase in the Star Citizen Pledge Store, where the studio sells various in-game items such as ships, cosmetics, and upgrades.
It’s not uncommon to sell items such as flight blades in this context, as CIG usually raises funds for its game through a pledge store. However, Star Citizen has traditionally allowed players to buy upgrades using either real money or in-game currency (known as aUEC). Although the studio had previously stated that these upgrades would eventually be available for purchase with in-game currency later in the summer, they were made immediately accessible to those who wanted to pay cash. This move to exclusively sell the flight blades behind a real-money paywall raised eyebrows among many fans, as it seemed like a significant step. The forum post announcing the flight blades has received over 2,000 replies, which is far more than usual and most of these comments are negative.
1. User Vraxer asserted that “It’s not acceptable to sell performance-enhancing add-ons and restrict access to them by a paywall, even temporarily, as this still falls under the category of ‘pay-to-win.'”
2. Alternatively, User Morphologis commented that “If we start treating new features as marketable website items, where does it stop? Will we soon be selling early access to Nyx Jump Gates or exclusive new mission coordinates? This is going beyond the line.”
The rapid and powerful uprising of fans caught CIG off guard, forcing them to reconsider their strategy regarding flight blades. In a subsequent discussion that received more than 1,100 responses and an overwhelmingly negative response, the studio acknowledged their mistake, attributing it to working at an unprecedented pace to deliver numerous game updates this year. Instead of releasing the components exclusively through the pledge store, CIG decided to delay the launch until later in the summer, making them available for both real money and in-game currency simultaneously. For future releases, CIG promised to make the items accessible within the game from the get-go, stating, “For future gameplay kit introductions, we will guarantee that these items can be obtained in-game on the first day.
It’s not too unexpected that the minor setback hasn’t eased the dissatisfaction among Star Citizen players. In fact, many of them remain upset and agitated due to the introduction of game components perceived as “pay to win” – these are items that can drastically enhance or alter a ship’s behavior during regular gameplay scenarios. As SaltEMike, the highest-rated poster, put it, “This is more of a temporary solution to pacify people, but the core problem lies in the ongoing addition of in-game items that have a substantial impact on a player’s daily activities.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel the heat of frustration brewing among us due to recent changes in Star Citizen. You see, since its crowdfunding campaign kickstarted in 2013, this game has amassed an incredible fortune from early backers like myself, totaling over $800 million according to their official site. Given that it’s still technically in the early access phase, Star Citizen is one of the most costly games ever produced – a fact that’s hard not to notice.
Although the game carries an extremely high price, Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) has faced difficulties in their development process. Last year, rumors surfaced suggesting that employees at CIG were compelled to work excessive hours, often seven days a week, on both the game and its first-person shooter spinoff, Squadron 42.
