Last week, a hint was dropped about an upcoming team-up in Overwatch, revealing that Capcom’s Street Fighter series will be the first video game franchise to merge with Blizzard’s hero-based shooter. This partnership means that eight characters from Overwatch will receive a Street Fighter makeover, allowing them to don costumes based on eight iconic Street Fighter fighters. Additionally, new themed emotes are also expected as part of this collaboration.
As a fervent admirer, I had the privilege of sitting down with Dion Rogers, the art director of Overwatch, and Arnold Tsang, a former character art director, for an exclusive chat about the integration of Street Fighter into Overwatch. We delved into the character-selection process, as well as how Street Fighter served as a foundational influence on various design aspects within Overwatch from its inception.
“Match made in heaven”
Since approximately a year ago, as mentioned by Rogers, the Overwatch and Street Fighter collaboration, described by Tsang as “an ideal union,” has been a point of great anticipation. A significant factor contributing to this, according to Rogers, is the common history between Capcom and the development of games.
Rogers notes that in some collaborations, there might be a need for additional clarification. However, Capcom stands out as they are game developers who grasp the situation quickly. If we share complexities like technical difficulties or the need to adjust visual aspects, they readily understand and respond positively. The communication between us and Capcom was smooth and enjoyable.
Capcom granted the Overwatch team full control over which heroes they wanted to incorporate from both Overwatch and Street Fighter, as well as determining the Street Fighter characters that would be partnered with these heroes. However, there was one condition: The Street Fighter characters must belong to the roster of the existing game, Street Fighter 6.
According to Rogers, we had full control over how that design would shape up. Capcom provided some recommendations after examining our work, but since there are numerous Street Fighter enthusiasts among us, the concept artists already had their own ideas. In the end, we discussed and decided together on which hero was the perfect fit for the character.
Finding the right pair
In collaboration with Capcom, the Overwatch team ultimately decided on eight Overwatch characters who would embody their Street Fighter counterparts.
- Hanzo as Ryu
- Sigma as M. Bison
- Winston as Blanka
- Cammy as Widowmaker
- Soldier: 76 as Guile
- Zenyatta as Dhalsim
- Juno as Chun-Li
- Kimiko as Juri
As a devoted fan, I’ve got to say, some strategic moves really opened up fresh aspects of our favorite hero. Combining Widowmaker with Cammy, both sharing that assassin or “seductive siren” vibe, provided an intriguing chance to present Widowmaker with a skin tone more akin to ours rather than her usual purple hue.
In the process of reimagining characters, certain groups encountered distinct hurdles. For instance, transforming Sigma into M. Bison led to Sigma wearing a cape, which isn’t typically part of his attire. According to Rogers, this alteration doesn’t significantly impact gameplay. “Typically, the hero’s animations and movements determine their identity, but with the cape, Bison now stands out as a distinctive skin for Sigma. No other Sigma skin features such an accessory.
As a passionate fan, I must admit that the most thrilling aspects of creating these character skins lie in the moments when animators subtly infuse elements from the characters’ backstories into unanticipated corners. For instance, who would have thought to combine Hanzo with Ryu? At first glance, it may seem like an insurmountable task given that Ryu is not an archer. Yet, during the design phase, the team ingeniously paired them together, and I found myself utterly captivated by their creative evolution.
In a conversation, Arnold Tsang remarked, “Everything else [with Hanzo] seems to fit flawlessly, but we found it strange that Hanzo is an archer when everyone else uses guns.” He added, “If Ryu were part of Overwatch, he might opt for a different weapon over the bow instead.
The Hanzo pairing allowed Tsang to make an unexpected connection as well, saying, “In Street Fighter, Ryu carries a white bag when he travels. Noticeably, Hanzo’s quiver in this skin doesn’t hold arrows; instead, it resembles more of a duffel bag, designed to mimic the traveling Ryu.
Overwatch Fighter
When inquired about whether the team found it surprising that the two properties seamlessly blended together, Tsang responded by stating that he instinctively believed they would mesh well because Street Fighter is deeply ingrained in both Overwatch’s essence and his own artistic style. “I honed my drawing skills by observing the Street Fighter and Capcom artists,” Tsang clarifies.
In the initial stages of creating the game, our team decided to feature heroes hailing from various nations, a concept heavily influenced by Street Fighter. As I would gaze at my poster filled with diverse characters and their country flags, this idea was born. Consequently, Overwatch embodies that spirit, bringing together characters representing numerous cultures worldwide.
With Overwatch incorporating characters from Street Fighter, imagine if it was the other way around – if an Overwatch hero stepped into the fight in Street Fighter. Tsang shares some thoughts on which Overwatch character might be a good fit for the Street Fighter roster.
In Tsang’s opinion, since Genji and Doomfist are close-combat characters, they are natural fits for any game. However, many of the other heroes have guns, which makes it challenging to envision how they could work within a traditional fighting game without diminishing the martial arts aspect’s creativity. Hanzo, who possesses both a bow and a sword, is an exception. Tsang eventually decides that Doomfist, designed specifically for a fighting game, would be the ideal choice among the characters he considered.
Beginning May 20th, the crossover event featuring Overwatch and Street Fighter will be available for play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and personal computers.
