As a seasoned movie reviewer, I must warn you that this piece delves into spoilers for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, episode 3 titled “Why Did the Mainlanders Cross the River?”. In this gripping tale, we encounter one of The Walking Dead’s most psychopathic villains yet – The Croat. Despite sharing a past alliance with Negan, the ex-Savior member abandoned their group. This spinoff series sheds light on why.
In season 1, The Croat was a prominent figure, and in Dead City, he reemerges as an essential character in Negan’s narrative. Working for the Dama, The Croat keeps tabs on his former leader, weaving an intriguing storyline throughout the series. Despite their tumultuous history, The Croat continues to idolize Negan, showcasing a complex dynamic between the two characters.
In a different phrasing, it can be said that the character portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Walking Dead is still seen as a merciless leader who spares no one, and his scenes with Negan are particularly intriguing due to this trait. However, this raises the question of why the Croat abandoned the Saviors given that he continues to admire Negan so much after such a long period. Thankfully, Dead City not only clarifies what led to the villain’s downfall at Sanctuary but also sheds light on where his story progressed afterward, providing valuable insights into one of the spinoff’s most compelling characters.
Negan Tried To Kill The Croat After Deeming Him Too Dangerous
The Croat’s Extreme Behavior Made Him Too Unhinged For Negan, Even During His Savior Days
As a cinephile, I’ve got to say, the Croat, in the role of the Saviors’ tormentor and interrogator, was downright chilling. His methods were extreme, even making Negan, the self-proclaimed villain, flinch. Yet, there was a line Negan wouldn’t cross, a hint of humanity that made us believe in his eventual redemption.
However, some Saviors took delight in inflicting pain, with the Croat appearing to be among the most twisted. Despite not witnessing the full extent of his capabilities, it was clear he was at the top of the list when it came to brutality. A chilling reminder that even in the darkest corners of a storyline, there are characters who push the boundaries of human cruelty.
City of the Dead made clear the history between the two, detailing how Negan had attempted to kill the Croat due to his actions becoming excessive. In response, Negan, the former leader of the Saviors, fired at his trusted ally, which led to the Croat losing an ear. This incident didn’t appear to alter Negan’s feelings significantly, if at all in the long term, but the near-assassination served as a warning for the Croat to leave Sanctuary.
In the spinoff of The Walking Dead, it’s clear that the villain wasn’t harboring too much resentment since he gave Negan an electrified version of Lucille and advocated for his inclusion in his schemes with the Dama. Even someone as unpredictable as the Croat understood the threat to his life. Consequently, he abandoned the Saviors, understanding that Negan wanted him dead. Instead of his original destination, he ended up in Manhattan.
What Happened To The Croat Between Leaving Negan & The Walking Dead: Dead City
The Croat Attempted To Return To His Home In Croatia But A Storm Brought Him To Manhattan
Following his departure from Negan and the Saviors, the man from Croatia embarked on a boat towards Croatia, but his journey ended up being cut short. It’s uncertain how much time he spent in America, but choosing to return to his native country appeared daring given the challenges of international travel depicted in The Walking Dead. This decision almost proved disastrous as during his trip, a violent storm disrupted his passage, causing him to wash ashore on Manhattan. Stranded, he explored the island himself before eventually collapsing inside a theater.

In contrast to his vulnerable state, the Croat maintains that he found himself on a couch, covered by a blanket and surrounded by sweets on a nearby table, suggesting it was the Dama who took care of him. This appears to be the cause of his unwavering loyalty towards her, making the Croat one of the most intriguing characters in season 2 of Dead City. Since then, he has remained an steadfast ally of the Dama, which explains why he holds significant power in Dead City, despite having parted ways with the Saviors.
