You Won’t Believe Why Hershel & Maggie Are Falling Apart in Dead City Season 2, Episode 3!

Caution: This review reveals SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, episode 3. I must admit that this latest episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 isn’t my favorite yet, but it’s not terrible either. Previously, in the second episode of season 2, there was a lot of action and walkers were utilized creatively, serving as human-sized cannonballs that destroyed New Babylon’s ferry. The cruelty of Dama was evident when she mercilessly sliced Victor’s throat, despite Negan sparing Hershel and others in the previous episode. The first episode offered a glimpse into the old Negan, as Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character performed to bring unity among New York City’s factions.

The series of occurrences marked a strong beginning for the season, but episode 3 fails to match their intensity in terms of excitement and surprising events. This week’s installment offers a more leisurely introduction, and at times, the pace becomes sluggish during the hour. However, there are still some enjoyable scenes, particularly one involving walkers in Central Park that I found intriguing. The episode primarily focused on developing Hershel’s character, providing insights into Logan Kim’s young survivor’s situation.

Dead City Season 2 Uses One Of New York City’s Most Iconic Locations

The Series Understands What Its Setting Offers

Before delving into the heart of the matter, allow me to express my preference for a particular scene from the episode. The most intriguing aspect of traversing New York City in Dead City is observing how famous landmarks have been transformed by the zombie apocalypse. In episode 3, the remaining members of the New Babylon Federation are forced to navigate Central Park as they strive to reach a secure boathouse and evade the Croat’s men. This journey inevitably leads to complications.

Just as anticipated, the flora in the park has become lush and dense. Moreover, Central Park is bustling with pedestrians, creating an intense scenario where the survivors must navigate through high grass while being encircled by walkers. This situation brought to mind the scene featuring velociraptors in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Whether or not the creators aimed to pay tribute to this famous franchise, the sequence where the walkers systematically picked off the group, one by one, was equally nerve-wracking.

One intriguing aspect of the episode was the community that’s dwelled in Central Park for quite some time. I believed there could have been more dynamic possibilities regarding what this group symbolized, but instead, Dead City chose to portray them as a serene bunch of characters who embrace a harmonious lifestyle with nature. Regrettably, despite my anticipation of some thrilling elements tied to their presence, I found myself underwhelmed by the majority of their scenes.

Hershel’s Relationship With The Dama Is Revealed Through Flashbacks

Maggie & Negan’s Reunion Comes Closer After A Key Moment

In episode 3 of season 2 of “Dead City,” the series effectively clarifies Hershel’s mental state, providing much-needed insight into his character. Despite the slower pace that somewhat slows down the episode compared to others, I believe the important message it conveys justifies this brief pause midway through season 2. Previously, we learned that Hershel had spent time with the Dama before Maggie managed to rescue him. The series also emphasized that Maggie’s character and her son were not in a favorable situation.

In simpler terms, I appreciated learning why that event unfolded. The scene where Negan killed Glenn in “The Walking Dead” stands out as a particularly intense moment. It was so violent that Maggie will always remember it. Even though Negan has shown signs of improvement numerous times, she can’t seem to move past it, which makes sense to me. I thought it was intriguing how “Dead City” season 2 added a fresh perspective on this situation by introducing Hershel. Maggie’s fixation on Negan is so strong that it overshadows her son’s feelings.

In episode 3, we learn that the Dama formed a connection with Hershel while he was held captive. She tapped into his artistic side and truly understood him for who he was. Since Maggie had been preoccupied with Negan, Hershel felt seen in a way she hadn’t before by the Dama. This became evident when Maggie immediately focused on Negan rather than Hershel after hearing that he had saved him. I’m curious to find out just how much of the Dama’s influence Hershel is acting upon behind Maggie’s back.

In summary, the flashbacks conclude with the Dama informing Hershel that he might need to carry out certain actions upon his return home. Given Hershel appears to be a secret agent for the Dama, as suggested by the episode, this could significantly shape season 2. As Negan rescues Hershel and Maggie is aware of this, we’re edging towards their long-awaited onscreen reunion. I’m eagerly anticipating how this unfolds!
