In the Dragon Ball Z series, Goku has undoubtedly taken some actions that have left viewers scratching their heads. Known for his tendency to spare villains who arguably don’t deserve a second chance, and often falling prey to deceit, Goku has found himself in trouble more times than we can count. Among the questionable moves he’s made, none are as widely criticized as when he gave Cell a Senzu Bean before the fight against Gohan at the Cell Games. At first glance, it seems like a strange display of mercy towards an adversary. Many fans find it difficult to understand why Goku would extend such sympathy to Cell, and they view this decision as downright foolish.
Among all villains, none were as formidable as this one, and to make matters worse, he was about to engage in battle with Goku’s own child. Under such circumstances, it would have been wiser for Goku to keep his cool, giving Gohan a slight edge. Reflecting on the situation now, however, Goku’s gift of Senzu Beans to Cell might have been the only viable option, as it unintentionally set up the conditions that led to Gohan transforming into Super Saiyan 2.
Goku Couldn’t Beat Cell – No Matter Who Helped Him
Gohan’s Latent Power Was the Z Fighters’ Only Chance
In discussions about whether Goku’s choice to give Cell a Senzu Bean was incorrect, Dragon Ball Z enthusiasts frequently bring up the point that Gohan might have still attained Super Saiyan 2 without it. Another recurring topic is the possibility of Gohan defeating the slightly weakened Cell if they had teamed up against him. Although combining forces could potentially have aided in the fight, Goku recognized that even this would not have been sufficient. In reality, from the instant Goku witnessed Cell in his perfect form after he and Gohan exited the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, he was aware that victory was beyond his reach.
In essence, Cell intentionally allowed the Z Fighters to engage in individual battles with him instead of overwhelming them all at once because he recognized this strategy would ensure his victory. This tactical approach was evident early on during his fight with Gohan, as Cell summoned the Cell Jrs to confront the Z Fighters. Although Goku might not have been aware of the Cell Jrs prior to their creation, it’s clear that he would have sensed the immense power reserves hidden within Cell, including the ability to spawn the Cell Jrs. The creation of the Cell Jrs served as a demonstration of Cell’s overpowering strength, making it abundantly clear that even if they had attempted to fight him simultaneously, the Z Fighters held no chance whatsoever.
Indirectly speaking, the Cell Juniors played a significant role in Cell’s destruction. While they served as evidence of Cell’s strength, they were also the catalyst for his defeat. Had there been no Cell Juniors, Gohan might never have reached the level of anger needed to transform into a Super Saiyan 2. From the beginning, Goku aimed to gauge Cell’s power in their initial battle, to determine if Gohan had any genuine potential. Goku chose not to fight Cell in the first round because he genuinely believed he could win; however, upon seeing Cell, he immediately realized his own defeat was inevitable. Goku’s strategy from the start was to let Gohan take control, as he truly saw him as Earth’s only hope.
If Goku hadn’t trusted in Gohan’s hidden strength, he wouldn’t have handed over the Senzu Bean to Cell. It was his firm belief in his son that led him to make that choice. In fact, even Gohan himself hinted at the idea that Goku and Cell were holding back during their initial fight. Both Goku and Piccolo, as well as Krillin and Vegeta, had witnessed Gohan’s incredible potential on separate occasions. For instance, they saw it when he head-butted Raditz, and later when Gohan managed to fight back against Second Form Frieza. However, Gohan’s rage, his most potent weapon, was the one aspect that posed a challenge in Goku’s strategy. That’s where the Cell Jrs came into play; they were instrumental in helping Goku channel and harness Gohan’s rage effectively.
Goku Giving Cell the Senzu Was Literally Necessary For Gohan’s Transformation
The Senzu Inadvertantly Guaranteed the Conditions Would Be Right For Gohan’s Rage to Take Hold
In the world of Dragon Ball Z, it’s often seen that Gohan isn’t fond of combat. Instead, he cherishes peace and detests causing harm, not even to formidable adversaries like Cell. This truth wasn’t lost on Goku, and he was also certain that Cell had picked up on this as well. Goku thought that if he could maneuver Cell to put Gohan in a tough spot, it might provoke Gohan to unleash the tremendous power he demonstrated to Goku during their training sessions in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Goku understood that rage played a significant role in unlocking Gohan’s strength; his challenge was to find an authentic means to evoke this fury.
Indeed, it wasn’t in Goku’s expectations to unleash such rage, a part of the struggle he later regretted. This is why, eventually, he decided to swallow a Senzu bean, intending to aid Gohan. Despite knowing that Gohan was humanity’s last hope, Goku didn’t want his son to suffer. As his plan began to unravel, Goku felt doubt, but in truth, he had no other choice from the beginning. It was only when Gohan hadn’t transformed even after being heavily beaten that Cell shifted his attention towards the Z Fighters, aiming for Gohan’s true vulnerability: his friends and loved ones.
Goku couldn’t predict the future or how it would unfold, he could only try his best to help bring out Gohan’s natural, rage-fueled power. One method for sparking Gohan’s anger was by having Cell at full strength, so that Gohan could see the destruction he was capable of causing. Initially, this is why Goku provided Cell with Senzu Beans. As it transpired, Goku was correct in his assumption; having Cell fully powered allowed Gohan to reach the level of anger required to transform into Super Saiyan 2. The constant attacks by the Cell Juniors on the Z Fighters served as a means to fuel and cultivate Gohan’s rage.
In the heat of their battle, if Cell hadn’t been operating at full strength from the get-go, there might have been doubts about his ability to generate enough energy to produce all seven Cell Juniors that confronted Goku and his companions. Had this been different, it could be that Gohan wouldn’t have grown as enraged as he did before being gradually overwhelmed and potentially even killed by Cell himself. Unbeknownst to Goku, the senzu bean was the one item that ensured Cell would possess all the power needed to conjure the Cell Juniors, thus creating a perfect prelude for Super Saiyan 2 Gohan’s transformation.
Despite the factors influencing Gohan’s transformations, there’s another significant reason why the Senzu contributed to his victory: it boosted his confidence. Although Gohan possessed immense power, his main flaw apart from his peaceful nature was a lack of self-assurance. He often underestimated his own abilities, unaware of the potential within him due to numerous challenging encounters with formidable opponents.
Goku Actually Made The Right Decision to Give Cell the Senzu
As Powerful as Cell Was – The Fight Was Far Less Destructive Than It Could’ve Been
The act of Goku providing Cell with a Senzu Bean served as a catalyst for Gohan’s self-assurance growth. As time passed, Gohan eventually reached Super Saiyan 2, and his newfound confidence boiled over, making him overly confident to a fault. However, at the beginning, Gohan was unaware of just how much stronger than Cell he could be. This was evident in Gohan’s tendency to overthink and belittle himself. This trait was clearly demonstrated during the build-up to the final energy wave battle, when Gohan’s arm was fractured, and Cell was preparing his Kamehameha. At that moment, Gohan conceded defeat, believing he had no hope of winning.
Only after Goku communicated telepathically with Gohan through King Kai and gave him encouragement did Gohan find the self-assurance required to emerge victorious. At first, Piccolo was justified in his worry when Goku provided Cell with a Senzu Bean, but his excessive concern could have hindered Gohan. Even Piccolo doubted that Gohan would prevail in the final energy blast battle, yet Goku remained steadfast in his faith in his son until the end. In this way, giving the Senzu Bean to Cell was a symbolic gesture of unity from Goku towards his son. Despite everyone else (including Gohan himself) considering it improbable for him to win, Goku was convinced that no one could surpass his son.
In the series Dragon Ball Z, Goku’s decision to give Cell the senzu bean might have seemed irrational at first glance, but looking back, it could have been the key step forward. By giving Cell the senzu, Goku instilled a sense of confidence in Gohan, a young Saiyan who desperately needed it. Even when others were taken aback by Goku’s initial move, he was convinced of Gohan’s victory and went as far as to help make the fight more balanced. Without the senzu, it’s quite possible that Gohan might have been overwhelmed by his own doubts, just like everyone else who questioned him.
To elaborate, if Goku hadn’t given Cekl a Senzu bean to restore his power, it’s uncertain whether he could have summoned the Cell Juniors, which ultimately contributed to Perfect Cell’s defeat. Regarding major DBZ antagonists, Perfect Cell was responsible for the least destruction and casualties compared to others. The most damage he inflicted was during his Imperfect form when he drained energy from entire city populations. In his Perfect state, Cell was significantly stronger than Frieza ever was, possessing the capability to destroy Earth multiple times over.
Giving the Senzu Bean to Cell might have appeared contradictory to the Z Fighters’ objective at first glance, but in retrospect, it turned out to be the most effortless solution in the long term. Few, if any, of the fighters could withstand Cell during the Cell Games, with Goku and Future Trunks being the only exceptions. Although the entire Z Fighter team had to endure brutal attacks from Cell’s small minions, providing Cell with the Senzu Bean was the crucial element that ensured that Gohan would ultimately emerge victorious.
