Doctor Who Gives Zygons a Shocking New Home!

Beware: Revealing spoilers for Doctor Who season 15 episode 6 titled “The Interstellar Song Contest.” This episode doesn’t focus on the Zygons, but a subtle nod to the shape-shifting beings from Peter Capaldi’s era as the Twelfth Doctor is present. The Zygons, an old species from classic Doctor Who, reappeared during Steven Moffat’s tenure as showrunner, but they lived disguised among humans for survival. However, it looks like this might no longer be necessary in the current episode.

Despite making an appearance in just four serials, the Zygons are among the most frequently returning villains in the Doctor Who series. However, unlike other franchise monsters, they usually don’t pose the same level of threat. The conflict that the Twelfth Doctor had to resolve between the Zygons and humanity was prompted by their desperation for a new home after losing their own planet. Although storylines featuring Carole Ann Ford’s return as Susan and other subplots capture attention, the peaceful resolution of the Zygons in “The Interstellar Song Contest” is a delightful touch.

Doctor Who Season 15 Hints There’s A New Zygon Homeworld

The Zygons can finally be themselves away from Earth

In the 15th season and episode 6 of Doctor Who, a songwriting competition is depicted which mirrors the real-life event known as the Eurovision Song Contest. This event, originating in 1956, has since grown immensely in popularity and fame, even extending its reach to include non-European countries such as Australia among its competitors. In some unspecified part of the Doctor Who universe, Eurovision’s success led it to either create an interstellar version or rebrand itself to embrace the extraterrestrial community. Consequently, the Interstellar Song Contest emerged as a competition not between Earth’s nations but rather among performers from each participating planet.

Despite the co-hosts not disclosing if the Zygons are participating in the contest (it would be amazing if they did!), they do mention a few planets that will be tuning in for the event. Among these is the Alpha Centaurans from the Doctor Who series, who haven’t been mentioned for quite some time. More intriguingly, the hosts also hint that the “Zygon New Habitat” is one of those watching. Since Earth was destroyed in May 2025, and the Zygons’ homeworld was last seen in Doctor Who on Earth, it seems they’ve found a new place to reside.

Instead of referring to the Zygons’ new location as a “planet,” it’s more accurate to call it their “living space.” This choice implies that the race didn’t move to a different planet but instead, they built their own self-contained structure. Since Earth has faced some significant events, this adaptation seems quite prudent.

Moreover, the fact that the show is bringing up the Zygons again makes me wonder if they might reappear soon. This suspicion adds an exciting element to the narrative.

Doctor Who’s New Zygon Habitat Means Earth’s Zygons May Have Left

Earth’s Zygon population has probably been drastically reduced

In the modern era of “Doctor Who,” one significant revelation about the Zygons is that they are far more prevalent on Earth than people realize. Their talent for perfectly mimicking a human’s physical form means they blend in seamlessly when disguised, making them virtually indistinguishable. As we leap into the future with “The Interstellar Song Contest,” it’s reasonable to assume that the Zygons have since resolved their issue of overpopulation and found another planet to call home. Therefore, while it might be hard to tell for certain, Earth could potentially be devoid of these alien impostors.

Indeed, there’s a significant event happening on Earth, set for March 24, 2025 – an explosion. Given such a scenario, it’s plausible that many Zygon entities would perish. However, I find it hard to imagine a climax of Doctor Who season 15 where Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor fails to prevent Earth’s destruction. Such an outcome would be one of the Doctor’s most significant setbacks. Instead, I believe that before the conclusion of Doctor Who season 15, both Earth and its inhabitants, along with the concealed Zygons, will be rescued.
