Even though we’re a few days from receiving the Palme d’Or, the prestigious award given annually by the Cannes Film Festival, the event on the French Riviera became even more glittering on Saturday night due to the EbMaster and Golden Globes Breakthrough Artists Party.
Carrying on with their practice of collaborating at international film events, the 120-year-old magazine and awarding organization recently brought together numerous talented individuals and artists to celebrate yet another year of achievement, along with Bulova, a renowned luxury watch brand that served as the event’s sponsor.
Paul Mescal, Michael Ward, Diane Kruger, emerging Wes Anderson muse Mia Threapleton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Zoey Deutch, Jeremy O. Harris, director Ari Aster, and other notable figures gathered at the chic Lucia Beach, situated off the Croisette, for a celebration.
At the heart of the historic city, a gnocchi bar and an unending stream of champagne welcomed partygoers who had just left the night’s major premiere – Jennifer Lawrence’s “Die My Love” – and other festivities. The event was jointly hosted by EbMaster‘s co-editor-in-chief, Ramin Setoodeh, along with the president of the Golden Globes, Helen Hoehne.
To begin with the honors, it was Mescal who confessed, “Anyone who knows me even slightly would realize that I struggle with public speaking. When Jeremy asked me to take on this task, I was absolutely thrilled.
Honoring the 12-time Tony Award nominee of “Slave Play,” Jeremy O. Harris, with the Indie Film Icon Award, Mescal praised him as someone whose loyalty transcends into his work. In Mescal’s words, “it seems perfectly fitting that he’s been acknowledged for his cultural influence.” Jeremy, according to Mescal, embodies and will continue to symbolize culture in a broad sense.
Harris accepted his trophy in a sweet but fiery speech.
In his opinion, making an impact today involves dedicating yourself to your local community. He pointed out that the National Endowment for the Arts no longer exists, as people are returning their grants. He suggested that all major studios are essentially indebted to tech giants in Silicon Valley who use AI to discover our communities and collaborate with them, aiming to achieve more. Harris urged everyone present to identify and support creative individuals.
Afterward, Director Aster honored his rising “Eddington” talent, Ward, by presenting him with the Breakthrough Artist accolade.
Making a film requires immense effort and commitment, and it’s even more remarkable when something like this is produced. I’m genuinely impressed by the rising generation of young actors who are knocking down barriers and showcasing their talents,” he expressed.
Kruger dazzled in a sleek black gown, furthermore presenting the Breakthrough Artist award to Threapleton (set to make his debut on Sunday evening in Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme”). She praised him, stating that in the movie, the young actor doesn’t merely keep pace with some of the most prominent stars in Hollywood, but rather distinguishes himself as one of the most captivating emerging talents.
Threapleton recently posted an old journal entry from 12 years back, where she expressed her feelings about re-watching “Moonrise Kingdom”. She adores the movie and dreams of someday collaborating with Wes Anderson.
“It sort of happened,” she added.
Ultimately, Gainsbourg received the Vanguard Award, acknowledging his exceptional career marked by groundbreaking work. The actor from “Melancholia” has been nominated eight times for a César award, won it twice, nominated thrice for European Film Awards, and is also a winner of Cannes’ Best Actress award.
In simpler terms, she remembered her initial visit to the festival, which felt like it had been a long time ago. Back then, she was extremely perplexed and timid, thinking that place wasn’t meant for her. Fast-forwarding, she returned to the Grand Palais theater with Lars Von Trier’s chilling 2009 film “Antichrist.
In a heartfelt manner, the actress expressed that she felt incredibly bold working alongside Lars and his innovative art. Thus, she genuinely wanted to extend her deepest gratitude to Lars. Currently, Giansbourgh can be seen on Amazon Prime’s series “Étoile.
