Oh, what a spectacle! Meta, that colossal social media machine, finds itself embroiled in a delightful little scandal! The so-called “epidemic of scams” has taken over Instagram and Facebook, and not a single industry is safe! Even your grandmother, who only just figured out how to send a meme, is being targeted!
A spokesperson from Meta – surely a person of high dignity and wit – confided in the Wall Street Journal that this epidemic has spread like a wildfire, and not even their most brilliant engineers can escape the flames. Oh, but don’t worry! They’re working on it… sort of.
“As this scam activity has become more persistent and sophisticated, so have our efforts,” said the spokesperson, no doubt with a deep sigh of resignation. If only their efforts matched the sophistication of the scammers!
What’s their grand plan, you ask? Ah, facial-recognition technology! Yes, because nothing says “we’re serious” like scanning your face to stop fraudsters. And, if that doesn’t work, they’ve partnered with banks and tech companies. Why? Because everyone knows that when in doubt, call a banker! 🏦
Oh, and here’s the juicy bit: it seems JPMorgan Chase – yes, the titans of finance – have been raising a few eyebrows. Apparently, they’re not thrilled with how Meta polices its platform. According to an insider, a stunning 50% of scams on Zelle (that’s your friendly neighborhood money transfer service) between 2023 and 2024 came directly from Meta platforms. How quaint!
And let’s not forget about Meta’s recent “improvements.” Their stance? A slight improvement in scam-related incidents… but don’t expect miracles! Despite some recent progress, it appears Meta has, alas, grown weary of policing ads. They’ve decided to prioritize “safety” and reduce costs instead. Because who needs to stop fraud when you can save a few pennies?
Meanwhile, in the real world, Edgar Guzman, a humble entrepreneur from Atlanta, is fuming. His business, selling home improvement supplies, has been plagued by these pesky scammers. Customers pay for products that never arrive, and Guzman is left with the unfortunate task of telling his clients the truth: “You’ve been duped!” 🤦♂️
As Guzman laments, “What sucks is we have to break it to people that they’ve been scammed – we don’t even do online sales… We keep reporting pages to Meta, but nothing ever happens.” What a tragic comedy, indeed.
