Alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling added an intriguing touch of BDSM to the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, as they attended the premiere of Harry Lighton’s “Pillion” in the Un Certain Regard category.
The movie received an extremely passionate seven-minute standing ovation, marking a first for Cannes, where Skarsgard embraced a man in a gimp suit as the crowd erupted in applause and cheers. For the event, Skarsgard opted for leather pants, which he showcased during his on-stage appearance.

Prior to the premiere, I expressed my hope that the movie would leave you amused, thoughtful, moved, and perhaps a little enamored.

Before the show began, I shared my aspirations for the film – hoping it would tickle your funny bone, stimulate your mind, touch your emotions, and maybe stir some feelings beyond friendship.
In “Pillion,” which is Lighton’s first time as a feature director, we find ourselves following Colin (Melling), a shy individual who seems to be letting life pass by unnoticed. However, everything changes when Ray (Skarsgård), the charismatic leader of a motorbike gang, selects him to be his subordinate. Ray dramatically alters Colin’s monotonous suburban existence, exposing him to a diverse group of kinky and queer bikers. Throughout their journey together, Ray takes many virginities under his wing. As Colin delves deeper into Ray’s world filled with rules and enigmas, he starts to ponder whether the lifestyle of a perpetual submissive truly suits him. Is this a new purpose in life, or merely an exchange of one type of confinement for another?
The movie titled ‘Pillion’ originated from Element Pictures, the esteemed production house known for creating films directed by Yorgos Lanthimos such as ‘The Favourite’, ‘Poor Things’, and ‘Kinds of Kindness’. Revealed at Cannes Market the previous year, its script was authored by Lighton, inspired by Adam Mars-Jones’ novel ‘Box Hill’, which won the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize.
Actor Alexander Skarsgård, recognized for his roles in “The Northman” by Robert Eggers and “Succession” on HBO, was previously at Cannes with the 2011 film “Melancholia,” directed by Lars von Trier and featuring his father, Stellan Skarsgård. For Daniel Melling, who is known for his role in “Harry Potter,” “Pillion” signifies his debut premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
