Chile’s Villano Producciones and Storyboard Media are joining forces with Viven Film (Switzerland) and Chilean actor-producer Benjamín Vicuña (“Locked Up,” “Fuga”) to seal a co-production deal for the movie “Simulacro” at this year’s Cannes market. Juan Ignacio Sabatini is set to direct the film, which is a gripping political-sports thriller inspired by a shocking true football incident.
Based in Brazil, the movie “Simulacro” portrays the 1989 controversy surrounding a World Cup qualifier between Chile and Brazil. During this game at the Maracanã Stadium, the Chilean goalkeeper Roberto Rojas feigned injury, which caused an uproar worldwide and shed light on underlying problems within sports.

Vicuña shared with EbMaster that the Condor Rojas case was a pivotal event not just in his life but also for an entire generation of a nation, and even left its mark on global football. He finds it fascinating to create a film and unveil the truth behind the incident, how it unfolded, what parts were fact and fiction, and the aftermath. It’s a tale that, no matter where you are in the world, seems too incredible to be real.
Title character, Chomsky, is a relentless radio reporter who digs into an intriguing event, exposing a web of corruption, political machinations, and sensational media coverage. Blending suspenseful plotlines with dark comedy, the narrative hops between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
According to Sabatini, we imagine a movie with lots of action, interspersed with humor, sometimes resembling a police drama. This captivating film will present charming and realistic characters that will draw not just football enthusiasts but also those intrigued by the chaos associated with it.
‘Simulacro’ is a remarkable tale, so outlandish it seems fictitious, yet it’s real. It delves into the intricate process of building grand national narratives, tapping into our shared memories and the worldwide stage. As presented at the Marché du Film, we seek collaborators, particularly Brazilians, eager to join us in telling this story that strikes a chord with global audiences.
Javier Krause and Sebastián Cepeda, fellow co-producers, state that “Simulacro” signifies a special chance for Viven Films – it’s the initial step in our plan for project development with Latin America. Our motivation is rooted in our Argentine heritage and our strong wish to stay connected to our culture. Furthermore, we find ourselves in an advantageous position, surrounded by strategic partners and guided by a director who can flawlessly breathe life into this tale.
The production team is actively looking for Brazilian and further Latin American collaborators since a significant part of the movie takes place in Brazil.
