Donnie Yen is a contemporary master of martial arts, whose Hong Kong movies like “Iron Monkey” and “Hero” are on par with the best films of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Yet, it was the 2008 drama “Ip Man” that truly catapulted Yen to stardom among Western audiences. This film marked the beginning of a multi-generational martial arts movie series, drawing inspiration from the true-life adventures of Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man, who bravely protected his community during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
The story of Ip Man primarily unfolds in Foshan, a city renowned as a center for martial artists in southern China and the place where our protagonist, the grandmaster himself, resides. Unlike many martial arts films with tough-guy leads who are prone to violence, Ip Man is a serene kung fu master who fights solely for sport, self-defense, and defending others. With Donnie Yen delivering a captivating, subtly spoken portrayal and Wilson Yip’s skillful direction, Ip Man is unquestionably one of the outstanding martial arts movies that can rightfully be hailed as a cinematic masterpiece.
Donnie Yen’s Ip Man Is An Ideal Entry Point For The Martial Arts Genre
Ip Is A Humble, Compelling Hero You’re Always Rooting For
Set during the Japanese occupation of China in the 1930s, the film Ip Man centers around its namesake, a skilled practitioner of Wing Chun martial arts and a peace-loving family man. When war erupts in China in 1937, Ip is compelled to move his family to a run-down apartment and take up work in a coal mine. In this mining town, Japanese general and karate master Miura (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi) periodically selects workers for competition against military trainees in a martial arts arena, offering rice as the prize for victors.
Following the mysterious disappearance of his friend Lin (Xing Yu) after a fight, Ip decides to compete instead. Unfortunately, he witnesses Colonel Sato (Tenma Shibuya), Miura’s deputy, murder fellow kung fu master and long-time rival Liu (Zhi-Hui Chen). Enraged by this act, Ip calls out for a confrontation with ten Karateka, effortlessly overpowering them and impressing Miura. However, Ip loses interest in the games, leading to Miura sending soldiers after Ip’s family. Grandmaster Ip successfully protects his loved ones but eventually surrenders to the Japanese forces. He then challenges Miura to a showdown – a duel between kung fu and karate – as their final, brutal fight.
Ip Man Has Plenty To Offer Martial Arts Movie Aficionados Too
The Film Is A Love-Letter To The Genre
The movie titled “Ip Man” follows a classic tale of good versus evil, and it’s particularly accessible for those new to martial arts cinema. Yet, this doesn’t mean it lacks depth for seasoned viewers; quite the opposite. Firstly, the film boasts exceptional fight choreography, skillfully orchestrated by Sammo Hung, a renowned director with an impressive resume in martial arts films. Secondly, Donnie Yen delivers a standout portrayal as Ip Man, capturing the character’s sincere and quiet demeanor that makes his transformation into a formidable Wing Chun master all the more captivating.
Similar to other renowned martial arts films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Enter the Dragon, Ip Man combines grace in battle with raw power and action. What truly sets it apart from its peers is the unwavering resolve of its hero, whose modest acts of kindness and self-defense mark him distinctly from his adversaries, transforming his fight against Miura into one of genuine honor and character. If you’re seeking an action-filled film that also offers depth, drama, and masterful fight sequences, this contemporary martial arts masterpiece is the one for you.
