The movie “Final Destination Bloodlines” from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema is expected to have the strongest start among all films in the franchise, having grossed an impressive $21 million over Friday screenings and previews at 3,523 locations. On the other hand, the pop-star psychological thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow” by The Weeknd is looking at a modest debut, earning only $2.33 million on its opening day and during fan event previews.
In its debut, the sixth installment of the “Final Destination” horror series significantly surpassed the opening day record set by the fourth film, “The Final Destination,” which was released in 2009 during a short-lived 3D movie trend. That movie grossed a series high of $27.4 million on its opening day, but the R-rated “Bloodlines” is expected to surpass that figure by Saturday. It also benefits from higher ticket prices due to its screenings in Imax and premium large-format cinemas.
The revival of “Final Destination” as a series, which hasn’t seen new installments since 2011’s fifth film, is proving to be quite robust. Originating in 2000, this grim series revolves around individuals being intricately orchestrated towards their demise by a series of unexpected events – a concept that stands the test of time. The latest addition, helmed by directors Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, has garnered some of the best reviews in the franchise’s history (the horror genre is no longer the target of frequent critical criticism as it was during the 2000s). Cinema-goers are also appreciating the experience, with the movie survey firm Cinema Score reporting a “B+” grade from ticket buyers. These favorable reviews bode well for the film, particularly considering its production budget of $50 million. “Final Destination: Bloodlines” is poised to reap success in cinemas. The franchise has consistently been popular overseas as well, and “Bloodlines” has earned $26.4 million internationally thus far.
Simultaneously, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s self-portrait film titled “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is being released in approximately 2,020 theaters. Unlike the financing, Lionsgate is handling distribution for a fee instead. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, who was previously associated with A24, this R-rated movie also stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. The production cost around $15 million, with Republic Records, Manic Phase Productions, Live Nation, and CAA all contributing to it. This film serves as a visual counterpart to the pop star’s latest studio album of the same name, which he has incorporated into his ongoing After Hours Til Dawn global tour.
It appears that “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is not expected to perform well at the box office, with a projected opening of less than $3.6 million over its first three days, and it’s uncertain if it will make it into the top five domestic charts. The film comes two years after The Weeknd and Sam Levinson premiered their HBO limited series “The Idol” at Cannes Film Festival, which gained a somewhat contentious reputation. Consistent with this pattern, “Hurry Up Tomorrow” has received poor reviews from critics, earning a low grade of C- from Cinema Score, suggesting that it may not have a long theatrical run ahead of it.
In addition to leading the pack, Warner Bros.’ “Sinners” is also in contention for second place accolades. Even in its fifth weekend, it continues to attract audiences. On Friday alone, Ryan Coogler’s critically-acclaimed vampire film surpassed Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” earning an additional $4.35 million. Remarkably, “Sinners” has managed to reclaim some Imax theaters for another week of 70mm screenings.
On the weekend ahead, the movie “Sinners” is expected to surpass the earnings of “Beverly Hills Cop,” currently standing at $234 million, and move into the 12th spot among the highest-grossing R-rated domestic releases ever. By the end of the three-day period, it’s predicted that its total will exceed $240 million. Since Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 film “Gravity” earned $274 million, there hasn’t been a larger original live-action film in North America. Will “Sinners” manage to maintain its success long enough to break this record?
Disney’s “Thunderbolts” is closing in, raking in an additional $4.2 million on Friday, which represents a 53% decrease from its daily earnings last week. Marvel Studios’ production is projected to reach approximately $154 million domestically by the end of this third weekend in theaters. So far, “Thunderbolts” has shown stronger staying power than its MCU predecessor, “Captain America: Brave New World,” which hit screens in February. However, it looks like “Thunderbolts” may trail behind “Sinners” in the box office charts, and it will be interesting to see how it fares as upcoming titles such as “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and Disney’s own release “Lilo & Stitch” premiere next week.
In its seventh weekend in theaters, “A Minecraft Movie,” produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, continues to build momentum. This film adaptation of Mojang’s popular video game is now available for premium on-demand viewing. On Friday alone, it earned an additional $1.3 million, a 30% decrease compared to its daily earnings from the previous week. By the end of this weekend, it is expected to surpass “Jurassic Park” ($415 million) and enter the top 40 highest-grossing domestic films of all time.
Completing the top five earners, “The Accountant 2” from Amazon MGM brought in an additional $1.2 million on Friday. Now in its fourth weekend, the action sequel starring Ben Affleck is expected to collect around $4.5 million for this frame, bringing its domestic total over $58 million. It’s unlikely that it will surpass the earnings of the original 2016 “Accountant” as it currently trails by approximately 18% in North America, despite having a higher production budget.
