TMNT Sequel DELAYED?! Cowabummer! 🐒😭

Enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the follow-up to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” will have to be patient, as the release has been pushed back by almost a year. The 2023 movie was expected to breathe new life into the 40-year-old franchise, offering a fresh animated perspective on our beloved turtle quartet that highlighted their teenage traits. Critically acclaimed and commercially successful, it was the highest-rated film in the series with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning $181 million globally. When you factor in merchandise sales, it ranks among the most lucrative entries in the franchise’s history.

According to Variety, the release date for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sequel has been pushed back from its initial 2026 schedule to September 17, 2027. The reason for this change is that another Paramount and Nickelodeon animated project, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will be released on October 9, 2026 instead. Consequently, the sequel’s premiere will now take place approximately four years after the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie, which was released on August 2, 2023.

The Future of the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’

At present, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is the sole film slated for release in September 2027. It manages to dodge a potential animated blockbuster clash against titles such as “Toy Story 5”, “Shrek 5”, “Minions 3”, “Super Mario World”, and “Ice Age 6”. However, the upcoming “Ninja Turtles” sequel will be released in the same year as the much-anticipated and long-postponed “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”. The year 2027 is already looking packed with exciting releases like “Avengers: Doomsday”, “Star Wars: Starfighter”, “Frozen III”, “The Legend of Zelda”, “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova”, “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum”, and “The Batman Part II”.

The wait for the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is undeniably frustrating, especially considering that Mutant Mayhem left us with the tantalizing hint of The Shredder as the upcoming antagonist. To bridge this gap between the first and second movies, a 2D animated series titled Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered on Paramount+ on August 12, 2024. Interestingly, a second season was commissioned even before the first one aired, and it’s expected to air before the sequel makes its way to cinemas.

The delay in releasing the sequel to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” has sparked worries about the original voice actors reprising their roles. One of the standout aspects of “Mutant Mayhem” was how authentically teenage the characters sounded, thanks to a young cast that infused the turtle heroes with an energy that’s often absent in adaptations. However, as four years can pass between sequels, the sequel might encounter similar challenges faced by the upcoming season of “Stranger Things”, where the actors will age and potentially outgrow their roles. The original voice actors for the Ninja Turtles could record their lines ahead of time. But if the franchise extends beyond the second movie, there may be a need to recast, which could potentially diminish some of the charm that made “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” such a hit.
