Back in the ’90s, I found myself captivated by the raw, unyielding power that the Die Hard films exuded, setting a benchmark for future action movies. This gritty blueprint paved the way for some incredible cinematic adaptations such as “Die Hard on a Ship” (Under Siege), “Die Hard on a Plane” (Passenger 57), and even “Die Hard in the White House” (Olympus Has Fallen). It was during this era of action-packed masterpieces that Jean-Claude Van Damme seized his opportunity to emulate this iconic role, and he did so spectacularly with Sudden Death.

In this Van Damme action flick, he played McCord, a firefighter turned hero, as he raced against time to rescue the Vice President from terrorists during the Stanley Cup Finals. Initially intended as an action spoof, the film’s humor and quirky elements set it apart from the more serious films like Die Hard of that era. Despite being a box office success, earning over $64 million globally (according to Box Office Mojo), it received a mix of positive and negative reviews.

In his prime as a film icon, JCVD shone brightly in “Sudden Death.” Following successes like “Timecop” and “Street Fighter,” this movie marked one of his final major hits. Compared to other films that attempted to emulate the style of “Die Hard,” such as “The Rock” or “Speed,” “Sudden Death” often receives a more moderate evaluation. However, it’s worth noting that Van Damme’s 1995 blockbuster offers an enjoyable twist on the classic “Die Hard” formula.

To start off, I’d say Van Damme’s McCord is one of my favorite characters he portrayed during that timeframe. He’s just an ordinary guy grappling with emotional turmoil stemming from his days as a firefighter, and all he yearns for is to take his kids to a hockey game. However, when duty calls again, he steps up to save lives.

Much like John McClane in Die Hard (played by Bruce Willis), McCord finds himself needing to use his wit and resourcefulness to navigate through perilous situations. The movie introduces its own antagonist akin to Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber, with Foss (portrayed by Powers Boothe), a corrupt Secret Service agent.

In my viewpoint, Foss is a wickedly sarcastic, catty antagonist, much like Gruber, and he leads his unique squad of mercenaries. Drawing inspiration from Die Hard, the terrorists eventually find themselves in talks with the officials stationed outside the arena; it’s impressive how the movie incorporates an unexpected twist – one of these officials turns out to be on the side of the terrorists. The climax unfolds as Foss and his team attempt to flee amidst the turmoil, but McCord manages to thwart their escape scheme. To further cement its connection with Die Hard, the film includes an exploding helicopter in the mix.

Sudden Death May Not Be As Good As Die Hard, But The Action Is Great

There are several issues preventing “Suden Death” from reaching its full potential for greatness. The combination of realistic action and playful humor doesn’t always blend well, while some violent scenes, particularly those involving hostage executions, can come off as unnecessarily cruel. However, “ Suden Death remains a solidly entertaining offering within the genre” due to its high-quality action sequences. The fight between McCord and a terrorist disguised as a mascot penguin is both strange and thrilling, while director Peter Hyams maintains tension throughout the movie, especially during the fights.

In McCord’s approach, he prefers to avoid guns and instead relies on homemade gadgets or plain old-fashioned fist fights, which adds a raw intensity to the battles. The film Sudden Death was made before CGI became widespread, so the stunts, explosions, and special effects are primarily real, giving them an impressive, authentic look. Admittedly, there are some similarities between Sudden Death and the classic action movie Die Hard, both in plot structure and character development. However, emulating one of the greatest action films of all time isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

1990s action fans might have overlooked Sudden Death, but it’s worth revisiting due to its nostalgic charm. The storyline is unconventional and has inconsistencies, but the rapid pace keeps these flaws from being noticeable, underscoring why Jean-Claude Van Damme was a significant figure in this era.
