Over the years, the Highlander franchise has produced various films, TV shows, and even an animated series in the mid-1990s. This was a common trend back then where adult-oriented R-rated action movies got kid-friendly animated adaptations, like RoboCop and Rambo. The Highlander’s animated series made its debut in 1994. Now, more than three decades later, the entire collection of this animated series will be released on Blu-ray as “Highlander: The Complete Animated Series”. Preorders for this Blu-ray collection are currently available at Amazon, with a release date set for July 29.
After a devastating catastrophe pushed mankind into a new period of darkness reminiscent of the Middle Ages, Highlander: The Animated Series begins with a clandestine group of immortals vowing to safeguard humanity. However, one immortal named Kortan takes advantage of this situation to establish a tyrannical new empire. As time passes, another immortal, Quentin MacLeod, emerges to confront him. The show follows MacLeod’s journey as he strives to amass enough power to overthrow the wicked empire. It might not be shocking that the animated series altered Highlander’s original storyline to meet a child-friendly rating. Nevertheless, it managed to incorporate various adult themes, such as character demises and the delving into morally ambiguous characters, despite the absence of decapitations.
Highlander: The Animated Series is linked to the Highlander movie series, which includes five feature films, an anime movie, and a six-season live-action TV show. Regrettably, many of these are out of circulation and hard to find. However, good news! The first and top-rated Highlander film can be found on Blu-ray. If you’re keen on revisiting the original film and its famous Queen soundtrack, consider purchasing the Highlander: The Director’s Cut 30th Anniversary Edition for $16.49 in 4K Blu-ray format. This edition offers a wealth of additional content, such as insights into the film’s memorable soundtrack and commentary tracks on the 4K disc. Additionally, it includes a standard Blu-ray version of the movie along with various archival features drawn from past DVD and Blu-ray releases.
