In the year 2025, Jenna Ortega doesn’t seem to win over film critics with her work. Despite the release of her latest project, the A24 fantasy horror titled Death of a Unicorn, critical acclaim has eluded her. However, it appears that the audience has taken a liking to this new venture of hers.
Under Trey Edward Shults’ direction and editing, this movie features Abel Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd, and Barry Keoghan. It is associated with The Weeknd’s sixth album and has recently been released in theaters. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, who gave it a score of just 16%, audiences have shown more enthusiasm, rating it at 74%.
As a devoted cinephile, I must confess that initially, Hurry Up Tomorrow received a disheartening 0% rating at its premiere. However, as further critiques poured in, the score gradually climbed up to 16%, which, unfortunately, isn’t much cause for jubilation. Interestingly enough, this is lower than The Weeknd’s HBO Max series, The Idol, which managed a modest 19% from critics and an impressive 41% approval rating among audiences.
Chris Bumbray deemed the film “a painful exercise in self-importance,” while Jordan Hoffman characterized it as “a nearly plotless film that’s self-indulgent, overly somber, and, most regrettably, incredibly boring.” Pat Mullen contends that the movie, a companion piece to The Weeknd’s latest album, is so poor in quality that anyone who watches it will find their positive associations with the music tracks severely diminished.
The film manages to shine brighter thanks to its audience, who rated it significantly higher than the critics. Some viewers commended the movie’s acting and visuals, noting that it caters especially well to fans of The Weeknd.
Hurry Up Tomorrow Becomes Jenna Ortega’s Lowest-Rated Film
Jenna Ortega has been an actress for more than ten years, but it wasn’t until her performances in films like “Scream” (2022) and “Wednesday” that she gained significant recognition as a modern-day actress. The actress has featured in numerous successful productions, many of which were released between 2021 and 2022, such as “The Fallout,” “Scream,” “Studio 666,” “X,” and the upcoming “Scream VI” (2023). However, not all her projects have been universally well-received.
2023 saw her acting in “Finestkind,” a film that received mixed reviews, earning a 28% rating from critics and a somewhat positive 60% audience score. In 2024, she starred in another production that garnered even less favor with the critics at 30%, while managing a slightly better 47% from the viewers. She also appeared in “Winter Spring Summer or Fall,” which received a 38% rating from critics but a more appreciative 75% score from the audience. In between these, she had a significant success with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a film that is Certified Fresh at 75%, boasting a high 79% on the Popcornmeter.
2025 didn’t bring about any improvement since the movie “Hurry Up Tomorrow” started off with a mixed reception: it had 54% approval from critics but a more optimistic 78% rating from the audience. Despite its favorable response from viewers, the film’s 15% score from critics sets a disappointing record for Ortega as her lowest-rated production to date.
Hurry Up Tomorrow is out in theaters.
