Scarlett Johansson Says Filming ‘The Avengers’ Felt ‘Like a Big Mess’ and ‘Didn’t Feel Cool’: ‘We All Looked Insane. What Are We Doing?’

Scarlett Johansson sat down with Vanity Fair for a career-spanning interview, during which she reminisced about feeling out of place on the set of 2012’s “The Avengers.” It’s worth noting that she had already portrayed Black Widow in Marvel’s “Iron Man” two years earlier.

In the beginning, when we filmed the first ‘Avengers’ movie, none of us could predict its potential success. ‘Iron Man’ was a massive hit, incredibly popular, and it laid the foundation for Marvel Studios. ‘Iron Man 2’ also did well. However, ‘Thor’ seemed to come from an entirely different universe with a tone vastly different from the ‘Iron Man’ films. The ‘Captain America’ movie had its unique characteristics too. When we combined all these characters, including Hulk and Hawkeye, it felt like a chaotic mix, honestly. Even on set, it seemed surreal; we all looked a bit mad, questioning if this unlikely combination would work. Only Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon seemed to know what they were doing, and the rest of us had blind faith in them.

It wasn’t until the scene in “The Avengers” movie, where the camera revolves around the superheroes before their battle, that Johansson came to appreciate the vast potential of the comic book ensemble film.

She mentioned that particular scene where all of us were gathered in a 360-degree setting, recalling the moment. It was when we collectively felt optimistic about the project’s potential – it gave us a sense of power. Watching the playback later made it seem really impressive, but during filming, much of it didn’t feel as cool. We were young and inexperienced, yet we had such an amazing time together. We grew close to each other and shared unforgettable moments. It was a fantastic experience overall.

In the summer of 2012, “The Avengers” made its debut, receiving overwhelming praise from critics and earning a whopping $1.5 billion at global box offices. Although “Iron Man” had initiated the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008, it was the massive enthusiasm surrounding “The Avengers” that confirmed the studio’s ambition to construct an interconnected series of films could indeed resonate with audiences.
